Official Barefaced Bass Cab Club

5StringPocket quoted Alex, who said "It isn't a frequency cut off. The cone rolls off around 4kHz, it doesn't stop dead. The central dome rolls off around 10kHz. Crank the highs and you'll get a lot of treble extension out of the 12XN drivers."

Glad he dug that up, very useful info.
So many scattered posts… I seem to remember reading that radiating area of a driver's cone contracts as frequency increases. Around 5-6 kHz radiated sound is from the central dome but at a significantly reduced level, which is why the highs would have to be cranked to hear it. 40-4000 Hz covers the lion's share of useful BG frequency but it's impressive that this 12" driver can get that kind of extension.

Can't believe I was able to play an outdoor gig with my One 10 yesterday night and actually hear myself and be heard very well without the support of the PA.

Ok the drummer had his small jazz set, the audience was anly about 50 people, and I was just at the limit of farting, but still, what a great cab…

I plan to buy a bigger cab, in order to be able to go louder and get more low end.
I hesitate between the Two 10 and the Super Compact (need to keep it transportable without a car).

If any of you have both, how do they compare?

Can't really speak for your cab choices however that one10 looks fantastic in red! I wish I could do that to my SuperTwin.
A thought on the two10 or SC. You're used to the sound of the 10's (of which I assume you like!), so logically a 2x10 would make most sense imo - the two10 also has the capability to go louder and will push more air compared to the 12" of the compact should you ever need to.

The SC will be no slouch and certainly louder than the one10, you'll possibly find it less punchy, in favour of a crystal clear modern sound.

If you love the One10 I'd recommend the two10s for a couple of reasons. It'll certainly add more volume and bottom end that you're looking for. Secondly you can pair the 2 together for a great 3x10 stack when a gig calls for something a little extra. The debate is out there with mixing Barefaced 10s and 12s, Alex doesn't promote the combo.

If you have a way of trying an SC I'd absolutely recommend that because the 12s are very different from the 10s. Big Baby 2 wasn't for me so I have a One10 and two10s, YMMV.

Since you're starting with a One10, adding a Two10 sounds like a great idea. That retains the sound and character of the Barefaced 10s that you already have and gives you three different cabinet options depending on the gig - One10, Two10, and a nice little vertical stack of the One10 on top of the Two10.

I love my One10 for low volume needs. Like you found out, it puts out a surprising level of volume for such a small cabinet and it's well designed to make your bass sound great. I use a pair of Big Baby 2's for gigs (a One10 isn't going to be enough in a classic rock band), but the One10 is great for acoustic situations and when you don't need rock band volume.

Looks like a Mozztronics DI2 on top??

Sadly I don't have a pedalboard photo but I've been running an Origin BassRig Super Vintage (in to a Rolls MP13 mic pre to bring up the DI out enough to drive this MAS power amp/ ICEPower 1200 module) DI out into the BT3 to try out the FRFR possibilities with this guy and it might be the absolute best rock bass tone I've ever had. SVT/810 stack in a tiny, easily movable package. What blew me away the most was, even though we were playing loud, it never got out of hand. It was always pleasant, never shrill, and completely present in every way. I am still in awe and absolutely loving this set up.

This is exciting to read! I have a Super Twin on the way that I'll be pushing with a GB Streamliner 600 or a Crown XLS 1500 + pedalboard. The pedalboard includes a variety of tube comps and preamps a well as an HX Stomp, so I'm stoked to try some different preamp/pedal combos and IR's with these Barefaced 12's since its been mentioned that they handle IR's and amp/cab models so well.

bassslinger oldbass,

I can't fix the error cuz this website won't let me edit that post - what?! anyway, seems you figured out what was wrong but for everyone else:

mikewatt.com

or

bassslinger low down,

the prob I had w/the crown xls 1500 was it kept going into protect mode... maybe it's me playing kind of thug-like which I don't mean to do cuz you can imagine how frustrating that is at a gig you're trying to work. I have not had that prob w/either the bergantino forte hp or d or the quilter bass block 802 though.

Thanks for the heads up! I've ran it down to 2 ohms without trouble but never ran it in bridge mode, so I am entering uncharted territory with that amp. I'm hoping that it will do what it do without freakin out on me. I'm guessing that I'll only need about half the full power output for what i need to get done, so hopefully it will hang in there. Otherwise, it'll be time to reevaluate amp options and go back to the BB800 or a try a different power amp.

bassslinger low down,

my sitch was bridged (you need to use/make not typical cable in this mode) into 2.66 ohms total load and the crown was goin into protect - breaks my heart but you imagine maybe like ig would say, "standing there w/my dick in my hand" - just lettin you know... how grateful to express yourself where you ain't cuttin any shorts by holdin back on an emotion, correct? look, I was pullin for the crown - others also BUT they couldn't deal w/the dynamic I was trying to sell (think vaudeville people), damn cuz for me it's a very inconvenient truth. crimoy

The crown xls series is rated to run at a min of 4 ohms when bridged. That may have contributed to the problem. I've ran my xls-1502 into 4 ohms bridged all night with no issues. Wonder if they detect a <4 ohm load as a short in bridge mode?

bassslinger gs,

I made a mistake in my post - I ran the crown at four ohms, into the super twin and had another amp run the super compact. running both my barefaced boxes in parallel for a 2.66 ohm load gave the bergantino forte hp ZERO probs when in its two ohm mode. that's what was in my head but my post totally lamed that out - so sorry for being clumsy and not together w/my words. no protect mode for crown for me only happened w/eight ohm loads but then again, it might be partly cuz of my style of playing. I never used the crown xls 1502 in bridged mode w/a load under four ohms. again, I'm very sorry for not having my post together and being a stumblebum w/my words and being wrong about what I was trying to spiel about. this going-into-protect mode has happened w/other class d amps I've tried too, not just this crown one and I've never run the loads under the minimum each amp says to use. I play bass aggressive and that might be the problem. it's one reason I use a keeley "bassist" compressor set up for limiter to catch spikes before it gets to the amp.

Had a friend round yesterday who is a superb player and we experimented with a variety of Barefaced combinations. Not often I have the opportunity to do this, just listen and twiddle the knobs while someone else plays and with the luxury of time on our side. I own One 10, Two 10s, Four 10, Super Midget and Big Baby 2 cabs. Basses were Fender 63 Jazz, custom shop 64 jazz, custom shop precision and Sadowsky Will Lee. Amps were Orange AD200, Aguilar DB751, Mesa 800+ and Bergantino Forte HP. The prime goal was to compare cabs, not basses or heads and I should say first up that of course all were superb. Main comparisons were between the bb2, Super Midget and Two 10s and since it was in my lounge the major point of comparison was tone as they all seemed to cope with the power available without obvious farting. Long story short, the clear winner to both of us was the Two 10s, on the grounds that it just seems to cop that tone and character for which it was designed. I don't use pedals so perhaps the twelves would have won on that score but straight in the Two 10s was just a joy to listen to with a wonderful warm but clear and punchy room filling vibe. Favourite amp was the Orange AD 200 then for Caleb the Bergantino although for me the Aguilar came second. As I have posted before I tend to use the Super Midget with the Bergantino Forte hp for rehearsals and the Four 10/Two10 combo with the Aguilar 751 for gigs, which is a little overkill. I was surprised that the Two 10s came out so clearly ahead in our opinions, of course recognising that different horses for different courses and we are both fingerstyle players. The twelves were certainly no smooches and would make anyone happy, but the tens just had that aural magic which was something very special. Naturally ymmv. Makes me think I might sell the Big Baby.
