"Official" Carvin Club - Part 2

Hello everyone, I just wanted to share in my new excitement as I am a new Carvinite! I spent a year saving up to get a fretless bass and finally decided upon Carvin due to reading all the happy customer reviews. I never thought to get a custom bass due to budget but looked into Carvin and realized that it would be within reach. Long story short, I have received my new Icon 4 string fretless and I have nothing but high praise across the board. From great customer service to the the fact that the bass is outstanding in all areas, i may have to say that it exceeded my expectations! Being somewhat new to fretless I was going to go lined just so I didn't suck right away, but thanks to TB and the opinion that it's worth getting unlined and just practicing more, I feel that after spending this last month of having it, I am dialing it in and feeling more comfortable. Construction is top notch, sound is superb, and the setup was perfect

Looking into Carvin lately and I've read a lot of stuff about people swapping out the electronics, at least in the past. Has Carvin improved their electronics at all recently or should I plan to have to buy a preamp upgrade if I get it? Also, can anyone comment on the B string on the LB75 vs. the Icon vs. the XB75. I'm trying to decide if I need to go with the extended scale or if one of the 34" scale basses will give me a solid low B.

I have or have had 3 different models of Carvin 5 string basses: An SB5000, a B25 and 2 B50s. All have great B strings. IMHO, needing 35" to get a solid B is a myth. These B's are every bit as good as the ones on my Laklands that I sold after playing an SB5000.

The new SB and Bromberg electronics are, IMHO, already an upgrade in their own right. And there is nothing at all shabby about the Icon modules that ship in the other models.

Wow, less than 40 minutes to get my questions answered. <3 TB!!

Ok, so a couple more...what's the string spacing on the Icon 5er? Can't seem to find that on the website.

As for pickups, I'm thinking about going with two HB5s (I think that's only available on the XB/LB, not the Icon...?)
Thoughts? Does this limit me tone-wise as opposed to going with a J/HB5 combination? I'm still learning as far as pickups go...basically, what is the best pickup configuration for the Icon?

Hi kids. Just ordered Carvin # 2 yesterday. First was an all-black LB70P ordered new in 2004. LOVE THAT BASS.

Yesterday's order: LB70PF. Specs as follows...

  • 3 piece body - walnut/maple laminate/figured claro walnut top
  • 5 piece neck - walnut with 2 maple stripes; no-show on top
  • Fretless with birdseye maple board, no lines/dots and epoxy finish
  • Claro headstock matches body
  • J99A's, chrome hardware, straplocks, gloss finish, roundwounds

So, whatchuall think? :D
