I just bought my first Carvin this weekend. I picked this up used off a Craigslist advert. Bought it from the original owner who hardly ever played it. Said he's mostly a guitar player who has way too many instruments and needs to pare down.
She's a 2001 B4 with a 2 piece solid Koa body, matching Koa headstock overlay, and J99 pups. I had been trolling craigslist for weeks looking for a Fender Jazz project to pick on the cheap as a fix up project, and to eventually turn into a fretless. I stumbled across this, it was a bit more coin than I was anticipating to spend but it was such a beautiful bass. I have all the case candy as well as the original owner's registration card which he never filled out. Also came with the original Carvin tweed case which is made by G & G Cases out in CA. Not a scratch on the case, heck, even the protective plastic scratch guards are still on the case latches.
I contacted Carvin before I bought it and they will still build the B4 type new neck for it, so I'm going to have Carvin build another neck as a fretless neck.
There is a milky white haze on the body, its more prevelent in real life, dosent show in the photos that well. You can just barely see it below the bridge. The grain beneath the finish is spectacular. I'm thinking on refinishing and doing a hand rubbed oil finish. Anyone ever do this? Feeback requested.

I'm already in with my fretless B40, but lately I've decided that my "big boy" amp rig is going to be almost all Carvin, and something special. I recently got myself a SansAmp RBI, and I've decided that I'm going to grab an HD1500, plug the SansAmp effected output into one channel of the HD1500, the uneffected into the other channel, and have myself two BR410 cabs, one for each channel. I haven't actually gotten the chance to talk to anybody who really has any experience with, well, any of the equipment involved, so if anyone could give a bit of feedback/guidance on my plan, that would be awesome. I'm mostly feeling the need for "guidance" on the power amp portion of the potential rig.
I'd post this in the amps section, too, to get a little more attention. I'm afraid I haven't used any of the equipment in question, so I am of no help.
I wasn't sure how I felt about the blue with tortoise shell at first but it grew on me.
Do many of you have the AC40/AC40F? It's still in transit but from the specs, I like everything about it, especially the weight. Is it much more versitile than a normal acoustic bass? Could it take the place of an electric for certain genres? e.g classic rock/Beatles/Beatlesqe/general cover band kinda stuff? I know it's chambered not fully hollow so I wonder if it can really cut through with say an electric guitar, drums and keyboard.
I have an AC40F - and I think it is a great combo of an EUB/fretless bass guitar with a little acoustic bass thrown in. Mine has a solid top - no sound hole - don't know how that would sound different than yours. I think it is a very versatile bass. Enjoy. Looking forward to your review.
Just got my ac40f. These labella flats are really silky to the touch and they play great. The tone is beautiful but so so dark, which sounds great but limits versatility, no? The fingerboard is ebony so it can stand up to anything right? Have any ac40f players tried other, non tapewound or flatwound strings?
I have flats on mine, but I don't think mine sounds so dark. Fiddle with your amp and tone settings.
I have round wounds on a fretless SB 4000. That sounded great too!
Hello all - I'm the newest member of the club. (Thanks Woody!) Here in a couple weeks, as soon as my long-awaited SB5000 arrives, I'll post pics. In the meantime, here is my fretless. BB76 with the soapbars and the piezo bridge. Walnut back with koa neck/maple stripes. I know debate on the effectiveness of tonewoods, but the idea of the flamed koa top and neck were to accentuate my mids, walnut for a good bottom end, and the maple stripes and ebony for brightness. Somehow it worked. I have had many fretlesses, and the is the one for me. My Pedulla was probably the closest second, but I don't like fretlines. Modulus q5 was way too aggressive, and my Zon Legacy Elite was warmer, but still not "woody" enough. This one has mwah for days, but retains an inherent warmth. If I am as happy with my SB5000 when it arrives as I am this fretless, I'll be a lucky man indeed! Be back with pics of the SB soon as UPS brings it sometime after 9/7.

Yestarday I ordered a new fretless neck from Carvin for it, the 5 piece maple laminate with 2 Koa strips. The neck will take 4-5 weeks to arrive though. I've had the Carvin less than a week, but love it already.
