You’re right! Doing the additional custom work does diminish the whole point of this bass. It was just a thought seeing as it’s going for such a slamming price considering the gorgeous quilted top, multi-lam neck-thru, etc. I thought a couple of more bucks to make it a bit more conventional would be worth it. I would like to at least have a volume control. Then again, a simple pedal could do the trick even more efficiently in live situations.

Gezz I don’t know, I’m really groov'n in this bass! However, I must admit the absence of any controls is scaring me off a bit (ironically, it’s the very thing that’s attracting me as well—go figure!).

I was looking through the finish options at the Carvin site and was wondering if they still do the following:

  • Black textured
  • Black stain on alder or ash
  • White stain (think Mary Kay)

I’ve seen these finishes in the past but not anymore. I know, for instance, that the bullet-proof, Pedula-like fret board finish is also not in the catalogs or on the website but is available by telephone request. So before I pick up the phone to ask about these body finishes; info anyone?

The pickups and electronics on this bass are great - compare favorably to my Bongo or G&L L2500 - esp the latter, w/ active and passive modes on the Carvin. The Carvin humbucker definitely grinds! Almost wish I had ordered 2 HBs! Number please?

Makes you wonder what people are thinking when they say Carvin electronics are "blah" doesn't it? Anyway, that's a great looking bass, bhunt1. Congratulations, and you are Carvin Club member number 125.

My LB75P is actually my A bass now, replacing my Bongo. The stacked buckers and piezo make it incredibly funky and punchy! :cool:

Good news/Bad news:
Ok, I purchased an AC40 FL (freltess) a few years back and I can tell you that they sound very good. That's the good news. The bad news is that, due to the lightweight body construction, it had the worst neck dive that I've ever experienced. I tried a lot of things, but the bass was so unbalanced that I sent it back during the trial period. I did, however, really dig the sound.
Some folks on the web suggested that you need to have it on a strap all the time and get some scuba diving belt weights and add them to your strap to counter balance.

I ended up going back and purchasing a Bunny Brunel series fretless which is the other side of the coin. It has the best balance of any bass I've ever owned, and still manages to give me a nice woody, although still electric, sound. Good luck with your decision and I can tell you that Carvin makes great products.

I had one for a few years. The piezo pickup system is very sensitive, so I noticed I had to be careful with my technique. I got a lot of thumpy bottom end, while still having fairly focused high end. I was using the LaBella tapewounds, which are great strings.

I didn't have so much neck dive, but I did use a nice wide strap.

Don't expect to get any volume playing unplugged. It is NOT an acoustic instrument at all. Plugged in, though, is certainly has an acoustic type of sound.

All in all a good bass.
