Posted this in "Pickups/Electronics" forum, wanted to give you guys a crack at it too. Love this bass. . .


Greetings all - I am tempted to post this in the "Basses" section also because it is about a particular bass, but wanted to get a moderator's thoughts on that so I don't violate rules, step on toes, etc...

I've got an Elrick Gold Standard 5 that I am going to drop a Sadowsky preamp into (with VTC). I've got the alternate parts en route from Roger and Co. to convert to a 5 knob layout and there will be an active/passive switch and a kill switch.

It's a light ash body with a wenge neck and board, Bart J's (stacks, not true singles) and an NTMB pre. I guess my question is, what preamp do you think would line up well with this configuration?

I'm trying out the Sadowsky because I have it handy and have been waiting for an opportunity to use it. I also believe that they tend to sound good in anything. I also believe that the heavy lows and bright highs might balance out the light ash and very mid-present wenge. Hopefully I'll be right.

The pickups will come out too, although not right away. I am thinking I'll have Larry wind me some Aero's with the woods/pre in mind.

Just wondering what anyone's opinion might be on other pre's that would pair well. I thought of F Bass, Glock...

so i think i am almost done with my bass and i couldnt be happier:hyper:

it might be on its way to get plekked soon. and i have some maple knobs coming. to match the top.

the tones that i can get from the mike pope are ridiculous.

The finish is the same for both body styles.

The e-volution has bullnose radiusing- meaning it's quite a bit more rounded at all of the edges, while the Classic has a more defined edge, like Fodera or Nordstrand singlecuts have (I greatly prefer the smooth edges of the e-volutions).

The overall body shapes are a little bit different, but the thing that's most notable is that the e-volution has a lower horn that doesn't curve as dramatically inward as the Classic, which makes the knee hole wider. I have average-sized legs and the Classic was never uncomfortable when restng on my knee, but I know some guys with thick legs found them a bit uncomfortable.

Also, while the knob layout is the same, the knobs on the e-volution are in a straighter line- the knobs on the Classic are in a more curved line.

The only other thing I can think of is that in the lower corner of the bass where the figured tops end, the e-volution has a curved transition to the the body wood, while the Classic has a straight line transition to the body wood. This is likely because of the different types of radiusing the two models use.
