Official Epiphone Viola Bass Club

Hello. Can't ask for a # because I don't have a pic to load, but I do have a question. Does anyone know a scourge for a pup ring that will fit a mini humbucker?

Hey gclark51! You're #9, in the Official Epiphone Viola Bass Club! Welcome aboard!

When you can post a pic, post it. Good to have you here.

many think that the viola bass is almost solid for the center block. It is actually completely hollow, it only has a soundpost under the bridge, identical to the double bass and cello.

Maybe it was just me, but when I got my viola bass, I restrung it and discovered that that the string windings down by the ball-end wouldn't fit in the slots. Eventually, I figured out that the little chrome nuts on the tailpiece were more than just decorative. I loosened them up and I could easily load the string and windings into the tailpiece. Then, I re-tightened it and discovered it locks them into place securely. I never heard anyone mention that before.

Hi all, I could use some pickup advice for my Epi Viola. The stock ones were pretty bad so I got two sets of Artec mini hums to try out, both alnico and ceramic. They were so cheap I just got both lol. They both sound way better than stock, but I'm still not entirely happy with the tone. The tone is beefy but the pups are kind of farty when played hard, and not in a good way. And I don't like their overdriven tone at all. I usually play with the amp gain way down low to get the cleanest tone possible, because that's where they sound best to me. But I think I'd like to try something else.

What kind of pickups can put in this bass to make it sound a little less farty? Does anyone make a single coil that fits into a mini hum space? Maybe a single coil would work better than a mini hum for this bass. I'd rather not spend a ton of money either so the cheaper the better, haha. Thanks. :)

Hofner makes eared pickups, but I'm not sure if they are the same dimensions as the Epi. There's also an adapter ring to install non-eared Hofner pickups on Ignitions, again not sure if they fit the Viola.

I've sold my Viola since the thread had started. My girlfriend has been talking me into buying one back (BTW she's been sold on a Gibson Jumbo guitar). I thought, why not buy a real-deal Hofner, but there are fake Hofners out there disguising as B-stocks in my neck of the wood. Meanwhile I'm also interested in a Mudbucker bass, like the EB-3 or maybe build a custom EB-2. Maybe I could buy a Viola and stick a Mudbucker at the neck?

A mudbucker viola would be cool but I'm not sure how those are mounted. There is no center block in mine so I don't know how you would install a mudbucker. I guess you would have to make some kind of stage for it to sit on.
