How do they compare soundwise?

The tapewounds seem to be a bit more 'versatile'. More 'mwah' it seems, much like when you get more of it using Nickels instead of flats. The TI's seemed much more full and fat in the mids/lows, and that was really nice. I tend to run more effects (chorus, flanger, ???) when I'm using the fretless and the apparent broader but thinner range of the tapewounds probably explains a lot of that extra perceived versatility. Also, far more sustain with the tapes. Of course, this is based on 1 bass, and others may have different and valid experiences that are totally contradictory to mine.

I really wanted to like the TI's, especially since I paid so much for them, but just couldn't get past the tension.
