Cool man!

My alder Decade and JO CS kick a$$ so I think you are more that safe with alder from Lakland. As far as fretboard...Carl says it doesn't matter, and I tend to be on that side. It might a little, but a slight EQing would bring them back level in my book. Body wood is much more important in my opinion.

I'm going for a 4 string p-bass, white pearl metallic finish, b/w/b pickguard, rosewood (or ebony board.. not sure), pearl blocks and binding, Lakland p-pickup, drop tuner. The bass is going to own. I'm on the fence with alder or ash. Alder, in my experience, is very inconsistent. It sometimes is very warm and resonant, and dead at other times.

Thoughts on the consistency of alder? Thoughts on whether fingerboard wood really impacts the tone on a fretted instrument? Thoughts on life itself?

i'm gonna have to figure out what pg to put on it. i'm gonna have the guys at lakland put a black one on and see if they can cut the white one that's on it, too. idk what i'm going to do with the blue pearloid ones, lol.

maybe roger @ jeannie's will take em back and give me a discount on a new pg cut to fit the chi's.

Agreed on the body wood being more important, although I SWEAR I can hear a difference in fretboard woods, even though I KNOW that the string theoretically ends at the fret, not the fretboard. Oh well.

so which do you all like better, pickguard-wise (because we all know the pickguard shape affects the tone):

Heyyy, I thought you decided the solo'd neck Chi-sonic would get the P tone for you. Hehe, GAS! That bass is gonna be purty!

Fingerboard wood: Carl put it in pretty logical terms to me. The fretboard is a thin layer of wood on top of the neck, and it's divided into small segments by the frets. For any given note you hit, that's such a small part of the bass that is resonating compared to the body. That opinion makes sense to me.

I only have one bass with an alder body for sure, my Fender P. (My old Ibanez from the '80s could be, but I really don't know--the finish is thick as hell!) It's light and extremely resonant. It's also 26 years old (and I've only owned it for two), so I don't know if it's become more lively with age. (Another source of debate on TB.) I know I plan to go with alder when I order mine, I haven't noticed much variance with the US Lakes I've tried.

Looks like I am keeping my JO5, and I am thinking about modding it. Audere or J-Retro? Also, I am not a big fan of the metal knobs on either...do you know if the fender deluxe stacked knobs fit on either of those? I like the Jazz styled knobs.

One of each please, lol. I THINK at the moment I like that 51-ish guard, but I am a sucker for the traditional P as well.... I realize I am no help at all, and I have my wife to back me up on that ;)
