it's not as much, because the ring is even around the entire pickup. if you add a bit of chrome or material to one of the long sides of that ring...enough to cover up the other rout, it'd work, imo. maybe i can use ms paint to make a crappy drawing

This was the inspiration for the "fill the hole with a pickup" option. I put this idea in the backburner for nitpicky "purity" and frugality reasons. The only pickup cover I can get for this one comes with a stuck-together(?) 50-dollar pickup I won't use, and I'll need to buy another single-coil to fill in one of the spaces (three single coils in the bass, only two of which I have).

Hmm... I was considering this at first too, but decided it might be best to man up with my wallet and go with a mod that won't look so "frankenstein." I have regrets about modding my squier so heavily, which together make it look like it was worked on by a clueless teenager. :bawl:

Man, I buy a Skyline and already I feel like I'm modding a Mercedes.

I understand what you mean now, 100%. Sorta looks like the chrome plate surrounding the pickup on an Ibanez ATK.

that looks like the basic shape of the pickup, yeah...but what i was thinking of was this...

Yeah, mine was more of a suggestion than saying do this nao!

if you do the twin j 'cover' then you don't need to put another pup in there...just rout for that cover, then put the j-pup you have where you want it.

I think we may have come full circle!
That was exactly what I had in mind if I were to choose the J neck, MM bridge option. It'd be easy buying a closed-top MM pup cover, which I could fill with just one singe-coil pickup. Great minds think alike. :hyper:

The only thing preventing me from pulling the trigger on this right now, is the strange sensation I get trying to "fake" the pickup. I guess it'd be like putting an AMG sticker on a stock Mercedes. Or putting a Fender decal on an SX.:confused:

Still, my WALLET would bend over backwards to thank me. $400 to install a pair of Chi's, as well as shipping costs up to who knows what.

I don't think you're going to get a Marcus tone from the Chis, the top end is too smooth (IMO). But I'd like to hear from Markus, Evan, Grateful, Matty and others with single-coil Chis on this, too.

i think he's going for the single coils only..not chi's, though...he just wants to change the location of his current pups and use a pup cover from a larger pup to cover up the fact that more of the body material is routed away.

i think you should try it out first, then think about chi's. honestly, just save the cash and then buy a bass that you can mess with to see if you can get that sound from something similar...then you'd have an idea on whether or not to 'destroy' your DJ

Tough to say. I have 2 basses with SC Chi's. But neither wear stainless steels strings, so that's gonna make it tough for me to chime in on Marcus' tone on the Chis.

I love the way these basses sound with nickels and flats. So I guess I prefer Markus' tone....:bassist:

Addition: That being said, I did MTD Stainless strings on the DJ5 w/an Audere, and it definitely had that high end poppy crunchiness (technical term). It's a cool tone, just not for me.

Decision time guys. I just received my 'other' Glaub today. It is a 2006 burst w/maple board... and is beautiful. So do I put the fretless neck on it, or on my '02 I got from Matty?
