New to me, but an early Lakland. Unfortunately I'll probably need to sell this to pay for the DJ though. :hmm:

We'll see when it gets back from the tune up at Lakland.

The singles can be housed in the larger casing as on the decade. it's all good. I believe they are to scale.

for the one above, I'd get dual chi-singles. there is a shot around here somewhere of me with the DJ body so you can see the size of the routs

Funny how the DJ and JO have diff spacings. I guess that explains the mass confusion regarding the DJ spacing, regardless of Dan confirming it as a sort of 60's position.

Man, can't wait to see your sonic blue. When's the estimated finish date on that one again? Yours probably being the very first DJ to sport huge humbuckers for pickups, it would help tremendously to get an idea of how they look in RL (the mockups so far are just a bit lacking..)
And it's gonna be active, too? Talk about taking "modern" to the next level... :eek:

On another note, I was considering for a moment getting a dual-coil in the bridge position. I do prefer the fatter 60's placement for bridge-only Jaco-ing.
But I see that Markus has confirmed the Single mode for the Buckers aren't as boomy as the pure singles. Can't afford to have that, so two pure singles it is, then. Just as E. had already recommended...


Now to confirm the aesthetics. Thanks for the Danny Forster pic again, E. :D Those do look massively huge, just as I had feared. They seem bigger than the neck pocket!

One thing's for sure: I will be missing the kempt, almost retro look of the stock bass...
Still, the huge Chi's are starting to grow on me, if even a little bit. First thing that pops into my mind is "Robocop."

Is this just an aesthetic thing or is there a reason you want to get single coils in the MM or double coil covers? i'm bad at paying attention. can't see the pics from work, either. :hmm:

Heh, I was bitten by the marcus miller bug, and after "extensive" research have realized that I need the bridge pickup moved for that 70's sound.
I've tried contacting a local luthier about drilling a new route and filling in the old one, but he just about ignored my email about that (he's known for his great communication, too).

I need a bigger pickup, or a pickup cover, to fill in the hole that will be made when the pup's moved to the 70's position. I was just in my Double Chi-Craze when I totaled up the cost of such a job. MAN, what a buzzkill. That's why I'm also considering keeping the stock pickups and hiding them under the MM covers.

Alright, i gotcha...yeah, work filter stinks, but if absolutely necessary i have my phone too. it's only got a slow connection, though, because of poor signal.

I'll get on it either tonight or this weekend. Work and gigs are taking up a lot of my time right now (the school year is almost done!).
It is strung with flats, so don't expect a bright zing! I am interested to try the chromes on it, though. Maybe I'll pick up a set later today.

It'll have a j-retro. Not sure on the ETA. Hopefully by the end of JULY. The body has been done for a long time now, but we're waiting on the neck. It originally was going to be a straight j-bass and the fretless was going to have the humbuckers. A mixup gave us what we have, but it worked out for the best. My DJ is, I believe, the first to have humbucking chi-sonics. My fretless is, I believe, the first fretless DJ with chi-sonics (at that, I've never seen another fretless DJ). It's all good. The fretless looks so unique that I hope no one else cops the look, but good for them if they do.

I don't know why you want to move the pickup of the DJ, but maybe you can just have it moved back and get a refin instead of buying a larger cased pickup. Single coil chi-sonics CAN come in the larger casing and sound the same. It's when the humbuckers are set into single coil MODE that they don't sound quite the same. You'd basically have the pickups in the decade. That's a good thing.

wow, so it was a delay. I knew it was taking too long to finish. Guess you were able to stumble upon some really unique combinations, though. All for the better, indeed! Now you got a signature bass you can call the "Macbass!" :bassist:

As for my own idea, which may seem a little neurotic, I'm convinced the slight change in location will make a great change in tone. Whichever mod I ultimately go with will be pretty drastic, so I want to choose the option that will never make me go, "Man, that's shoddy. Now I wanna sell it for a huge loss and buy a US model now."

The decision, then, should logically be installing the Chi's. But their inner workings aren't clear enough for me yet to signal the green light. The only other neodymium pickups I've seen, the Q-tuners, have so many lines of coils it'd be impossible to pinpoint a position for them.

Ack, all for that cliche "Marcus tone..." :rolleyes:

Sorry for being annoying with all this excessive overthinking. It's been so many years since my last visit to the US, and I want to get things down PAT when I go there this summer. I may not get the opportunity again for a while, and any mistakes/regrets will stick with me for too long...

why not get a pickup ring made that is kind of offcenter...rout out the area for the pickup to move to and then you use the pickup ring to cover up the extra routed space. you could make it whatever color you wanted, i would assume. if you need to or want to move the pickup back, you just turn the ring around to cover up the other rout.

And any more pickup ring than that would look too obtrusive... gahh.. thanks for the idea, though.
