Deal me in - a fretted five arrived yesterday. I took it to practice last night with the #}%*%]+ roundwounds and was favorably impressed.

This morning I was very happy to find that my old set of Status flats fit just fine!

I was lucky enough to find a brand new, pure black 4 stringer. They are almost extinct on the European side of the world.
None of those quality control issues reported about the Korean made Steinbergers. Almost perfect intonation. The keyboard is the easiest, I've played.
If this is the 'infamous' Synapse, I cannot imagine the L2.

I want to try different strings though. From what I read here & there, Status strings are the only way to go because of the string length incompatibility...

I want to have a B-E-A-D flat wound set, without a need to find a luthier. Any recommendations?

You might want to add your location to your profile - it will improve the quality of the responses you get if people know approximately where you are.

You can use whatever strings you want - the double-ball strings are nice if you can get them, but you can use regular single-ended strings - the clamp at the headpiece allows for this. Yours came with a manual and the Allen wrenches, yes ?

Since the fretted Synapse uses a 0-fret rather than a conventional nut for intonation you should be able to fit a B without much issue. But it's a simple matter to gently increase the width of a nut slot. A search through the Luthier's Corner for BEAD or nut files will give you lots of information. Mine are 5-string so I'm extrapolating a little...

I've found a readily available stand that works with my Synapse.

There was an earlier thread here about guitar stands for headless basses and I happened to have one of the stands mentioned in a box in the basement. It works great!

Welcome! Like ArtechnikA said, BEAD will probably drop right on. I'd start with Status flats - I've been using them for years and really like them.

Thanks, I'll be ordering nylon & flat 5 string sets from Status and give them a try. Maybe I can get away without filing the nut.

Here's a short horror story about nylon strings from Status on a fretless Synapse. This is what confused me about ordering flats from Status -though mine is not fretless.

Without having read the article, allow me to observe that some folks can break a crowbar in a sandbox.
I've got single-ended tapewraps on fretless so I know it is possible...

I have. I like the sound very much. While it took a little wiggling to fit them in (not much), they fit fine for me. Funny thing is it freaks people out to see the flat-black bass with black tape-wound strings ("What the hell are you playing on there?").

Looking at it makes me think of the "ultra-black" spaceship the band Disaster Area was going to crash into the sun for a special effect (in The Hitchiker's Guide to the Galaxy series).

Cool, I might order a set. I don't give a lot of weight to that blog, Status strings have always worked for me on non-Spirit Steinbergers.

Diggin my 5 string more every day. It is so light based on the way it sits on shoulders I rarely even know I have it on. My Q5 which I loved was like an anchor after a set.

So I've ordered 2 sets from Status: Black Nylon & Flat Wound. Both double ball.
I'll let you know if I experience any problems with them.

Mine's a log - I had to go to a much wider strap because it was giving me shoulder pain!
