Can anyone help identify the 2 extra break out boxes here?

I'd say the one on the left is a mid-boost module and the top middle one is a DTA buffer, which is supposed to reduce impedance effects on the tone, when you pan between pickups. Most of the buffers I've seen, are labelled DTA 1.3, but there could be other models out there.

The box on the mid-pot determines the boost/cut frequency. The typical ones are 250, 375, 500 and sometimes, 800 Hz. My Classic has 250, which adds a lot of low thickness. The older mid-boost modules are wrapped in copper foil and can have a capacitor and/or resistors hanging off them, to modify the mid or "added" high-frequency a bit more. On the TCT, the very top range of the mid boost has a treble boost as well, you should be able to hear it, if you leave the normal treble boost flat. According to the spec sheet, the new TCT and mid-boost modules have this as well, not just the original ones.

Yes that's what my two Tobias's had the mid break out box wrapped in copper soldered to the control cavity centered at 250hz.

Here are the guts. I can see it is a TCT circuit. There also appears to be some kind of potted sub-circuit on the mid-pot. It is also curious how the wiring to the treble control is coming off the mid-pot and bass controls.

Funny what you notice in pictures. There is also a hair from a yellow lab we lost a few years back in there. Shades of Marley. Must be the hair that is giving me that robust tone.

what preamp are you using?
I thought it was a Bartolini TCT in the Pre-Gibsons. Those had a single buffered input...
at least that's what mine had.

You are correct, very warm and phat, with those glassy highs! Right now, though, it doesn't sound so great, as the dual buffer has died and the balance pot is barely working. I've got a spare pre-amp, so heading to my local luthier pretty soon, for a parts swap.

Not a bad idea, but I'm pretty sure the buffer is stuffed as well, as the signal distorts very easily. (It has gradually gotten worse over the last year, typical of a dying component.) Given the jack-plug socket is also dodgy, I'm tempted to go with the new TCT circuit, with all new pots, switches, socket, etc. I'd like to be able to gig the bass and know I can trust it completely.

I've sent my old preamp to Pat Bartolini and she had Bill make another for me many years ago. They are super nice folks,
and are willing to help out. Took Bill awhile to build a new one for me, but they sent a new TCT out to me with the correct
mid centered at 250hz, all new wired harness with pots and all. I just had to solder it to the jack, everything else just slipped right in.
Needless to say the soldering job was the best I've ever seen, because Bill himself put it together.
Give them a call...

There's a nice-looking bubinga Basic 5 on ebay right now for $2700. But you might want to "up and ante" and go for the Signature 5 that has an opening bid of a mere $2300. Unfortunately it appears to be lacewood, which I find very unattractive, or I'd snag it myself...

Yes, it's lacewood. Very beautiful grain, but as you can see is prone to some fingernail gauging, particularly in the lighter areas.

Here is mine....not sure if I can get a number since I may offer this one up for sale soon.....

Beautiful bass, let us know if you decide to keep it.

I picked up this bass in October or November last year from House of Guitars up in Rochester, NY. It has a nice round tone and plays like a dream. It's a custom shop model from 2008, but I have no idea what any of the woods are other than the lacewood top. Anyone think they can help me out? (Pictures from previous owner here; I can provide additional pictures if necessary.)
