They work nicely with either the old drop-shoulder Bart pickups or the later ones, I've got both. The Pope pre-amp might seem a bit subtle, at first, but after you play live and loud, you'll get it! There's a little bit less fatness than the WTMB, or TCT, but more control and more sound of your bass shining through!

Also worth mentioning that my Signature has a 4-band Pope, so I could tame the strong 1KHz mids and still have a low-mid boost or cut as well. My Classic also has a 4-band, as a friend sold it to me, but a 3-band would have been fine, as that bass sounds more scooped in the mids.

Agreed. Huge difference between the NTMB and the WTMB. NTMB has a harsh throaty-ness to it. Some people really like that though. I even pulled it out of my MTD USA Saratoga and dropped in the TCT reissue. So much better now. I'm lucky enough to have the original working WTMB in my pre Nashville Killer B. I really wish they'd bring that one back along side the TCT reissue. I'll have to check out the Pope! Good to know.

I have a chance to grab a basic 5. I was trying to date the serial number and research it a bit first but I'm having no luck. I thought I remembered a serial number database posted somewhere on here at one time. Any one have any info on serial# 11815?
Also the guy I'm talking to read Ns3 TMB off the electronics. Doesn't ring a bell to me. Would've expected TCT or WTMB. Is that maybe and early NTMB?

I don't know the serial numbers so take this with a grain of salt but I'm fairly certain a serial number that high is going to be an Arkansas's bass guitar. I owned a bass made in that factory in it was quite nice.

Go to the Talkbass Classifieds and search "Tobias." That should give you an idea what they have been selling for. Might also check ebay completed auctions. I paid I think $2250 for my 1999 Classic, if that helps.

Ok. I pulled the trigger. It's on its way. Basic 5. I know how much you guys like pictures so I'll post the pics I was sent of it as well as my 92 Killer B and MTD. Interestingly, I pulled the NTMB out of the toga and dropped in the HRTCT5.4 Burbank reissue that Bartolini is selling. Huge difference! So much better (to me) also pulled the pups and dropped in the Baxis. Huge and smooth sound stage. Can't wait to get the basic 5 and abuse it.

Nice!;)

Dig the walnut. If you ever get the itch, Pat Wilkins can put a finish on that bass that would take your breath away. Just something to keep in mind.

Hi all, I'm ISO a used Growler or Killer B neck (5 string; pref fretted but fletless is okay): I got a Growler 5 in a trade and it has a neck bow that's probably not fixable. Sad story. Anyway, would appreciate any leads. (Found out that the Growler and Killer B used the same neck specs, so I can cast a slightly wider net).

Alternately, if anyone's interested in a Growler 5 in very good condition except for the neck, IM me. It's still playable, especially for slapping if you keep the action pretty high, but starts to buzz a couple places if you lower the action below "medium." I'm not much of a slapper so I can't use it.

Yes, it does look like a Basic 5 made by Gibson. Those era basses can be fine, but can also come with annoying issues. Is the price fair to you?
