Official Tobias Club

Had this fretless 5 for several years, recently got the fretted 4. Seems the pickups on the 4 are closer to the bridge, wonder how much that affects the tone? (Can't really compare that with these two since one is fretless.) Both are great.

Well, judging by a few observations that I'm sure most bass players have made:

  • The bridge pickup sounds brighter with less low end than the neck pickup, which sounds deeper and has less treble.
  • Likewise, playing the strings closer to the bridge sounds thinner than playing closer to the neck, which (again) sounds deeper.

Based on that, and all else being equal, I'd expect the one with the pickups further back will probably have a bit more midrange definition, with a bit less low end.

Wayne A. Pflughaupt

Seriously the guy is expecting like a 1000$ for it. He told me it was made by Gibson. I have to mention that he didn't know a lot about that bass.

How can you tell it's a Musicyo Tobias?
Because that was a very standard configuration (there were only a few) for them. 4 knobs. Wenge (or walnut?) neck with maple stringers. "Flat" looking logo inlay.

Hello!

I recently acquired an old Killer B and I am in the middle of refinishing the headstock.

It was ugly. See below.

I am almost finished stripping everything off, and I'm now toying with the idea of leaving it with the wood look and clear coating it with the logo/decal.

What do you think?

Is there any remarkable difference between the old WTMB circuits and a current Bartolini NTMB?

I ask because my bass had the WTMB originally, and I have it (in pieces) but I'm wondering if I would just be getting a different flavor of awesome rather than some sort of sonic revelation.

I understand there's a buffer involved in the pickup blending, and an A/P switch, but are the EQ points that different or more 'usable' etc...?

May I also have a number for the club?

Somehow got past me that you weren't a member, guitarmutt. So since you posted pictures of your fine basses (the only requirement for membership), I'm "membering" you! Welcome to the club #154! If you feel inclined, add us to your signature.

They are quite different sounding and I've never liked an NTMB in my Tobiases. They just sound kinda Meh. If you can afford it, the Mike Pope Flexcore preamp would be the best option to replace a WTMB! (I've got them in both my Pre-Gibs, one came with an WTMB, the other had a replacement NTMB.)

Cheers,

EG
