Apparently very few were made.

350 limited edition Growlers made in 2009. All had Ash bodies.

Having owned early Growlers with the original electronics (quad coil bart pickup and preamp with switches) and played the new model with traditional 3-band and no switches I can definitely say I would not want the set-neck Growler due to the electronics package.

I've only had this early Nashville Growler (1995?) a couple of weeks:

The Electronics are quite incredible

However I feel the build quality of my Arkansas Growler (2005?)is superior.

I think the neck join fit is better
The neck 'feel' which is obviously highly subjective
The fingerboard and frets are tidier

Don't get me wrong, both instruments are fantastic

Hi guys, I recently bought my very first and long waited Tobias. I've been dreaming of having one since I was a teenager in the late '90s. It's a Tobias Standard 5 Strings, the seller states that it was made in Japan but I couldn't find much info about it, he also said that the fretboard was replaced.

Just acquired a very clean mid 90's Gibson Tobias, 18v preamp, with mid switch & "slap" contour pull/ up vol knob.
What's the difference between a classic & signature model?
I'm not sure which I have, any info would be appreciated. Btw- it kills, it's a tone monster !

Wow, that's really nice! If it wasn't for the serial # giveaway, it looks like a Basic! With the minimal contrast between the neck and wings, it almost looks like a bolt-on. Welcome to the club!

yeah the Standards did have a 3 band Bart pre amp but on layout was strange.

You had Volume, Pan, stacked Treble/bass

Then, on the inside of the control cavity you had the Mid control. It was an actual pot that you could turn lol. I don't know, I guess it was cheaper to cut only 3 holes instead of 5. But yeah, a lot of people would 1 either cut a 4th hole for the mid pot and have it in line or would cut an extra 2 holes and switch the stack pot so you would have the normal 5 controls. I owned 2 of these Standards in the past.

Thanks for joining the club and thanks for the replies guys. Still couldn't find any other info through the S/N. I noticed the knobs differences as you stated Wayne, but maybe it was modified as skn5striing said. Anyways I'm very happy to own a Tobias and it sounds and feels great.

I'm looking for a 5-string Killer B in mahogany (to purchase). I have owned three Tobias basses: a Killer B in mahogany, a Basic in Bubinga, and a beautiful Classic that included a maple top. Of the three, the one that felt and sounded the best to me was the Killer B. I thought I was upgrading every time but I should have just kept the Killer B. In looking for one just passed up the opportunity yesterday to buy a nice Classic for $2k....it seemed too good a deal to pass up, but in the end it is the B that I want. Anyone out there have one they're willing to sell, or know of someone? Thanks.

Hey folks,

Has anyone found any strings that really suit the Growler pickup and pre-amp setup? I generally use R Cocco nickels or steels, but might try something else on the Growler, like some DRs, etc.
