Hey everyone,
Just scored this used Tobias Toby Pro-IV. I've been after a thru-neck for a while and love how the translucent red shows underlying features of the wood.

He was owning the Tobias, and the drummer had a fantastic mullet.

Just acquired a very clean mid 90's Gibson Tobias, 18v preamp, with mid switch & "slap" contour pull/ up vol knob.
What's the difference between a classic & signature model?
I'm not sure which I have, any info would be appreciated. Btw- it kills, it's a tone monster !

So, what you look to have there is a "Basic 5 Zebra Wood"

The Basics had solid body wings and a 5 Piece neck

The Classics had a body wood, Wenge Tone Plate layer and a Top Wood plus 5piece neck

The Signatures had the same body wood design all-be-it a wider selection of woods and I think a 7 or 11 piece neck

Ok, thanks for the info, I wasn't sure what I had acquired. I absolutely love it tho ! I had thought the Basic's didn't have the mid frequency switch, but I'm new to Tobias basses. This bass has great articulation & punch, I'm thrilled with it!

To elaborate on that a bit:

Basic - Five-piece neck-through, rosewood board (pau ferro on six-string), solid body wings (usually figured if maple), decal headstock logo, black plastic truss-rod and control cavity covers. Natural finish, opaque black, red, or white, or transparent "candy" red, orange, blue, or purple.

Classic- Five-piece neck-through, pau ferro board, highly figured neck laminations if maple, laminated top with contrasting veneer (wenge "tone-plate" on Burbank-era basses), inlaid pearl headstock logo, matching wood truss-rod and control cavity covers. Natural only.

Signature - Seven or nine-piece neck through, pau ferro board, laminated top and optional back with contrasting veneers, inlaid pearl logo, matching wood truss-rod and control cavity covers, and emphasis on dark, heavy tonewoods like wenge, walnut, purple heart, etc. for bodies and necks. Natural only.

This applies mostly to pre-Gibson instruments, though there were many subtle variations and a few odd hybrids; e.g., a Classic with a seven-piece neck, etc.

I don't love its sound, that's why I'm inquiring help on this thread, to figure out if the electronic is as it should be or not. It's not as crispy as I hear on various YouTube videos, not a great output. Certainly the 9v doesn't help but then again, are Killer B supposed be 9 or 18 volts? Did Gibson produce different versions?
Everything else I absolutely adore, ergonomic, neck and it's in amazing conditions especially now that I cleaned it.

I know exactly how you feel. I am a proud owner of a Tobias Renegade, and I have never played on a more comfortable ergonomic bass with great string spacing. I have spent a lot of money modifying it with upgrades in preamp and pickup.

My Tobias history knowledge is limited so take this with a grain of salt. I know that they (Gibson line) were originally manufactured in Nashville for a short period of time. Gibson shut the Nashville shop down and then moved it to Arkansas before completely shutting the line down. I do think Gibson changed a few specs between the Growlers and perhaps the Killer B's. That's why you can find a difference in head stocks and preamps between these models. Other than that I don't know of any serial # data base to know for sure.

If you forced me to guess, I'd bet yours was built in Arkansas.

Keep on jamming my dude and enjoy your killer B.
