Funnily enough I played one that was identical to this but in metallic green in 1989 or 1990 when my bass teacher at the time was working in a music shop, and instantly fell in love with it. Unfortunately I was a financially challenged teenager and bought a US Fender Precision instead because it was 1/3 of the price of the Tune. Ever since I have kept my eyes open, waiting to find another and came across this late last year. It took me until last week to be able to buy it, but luckily for me the brand is relatively obscure in Australia so it hadn't sold yet. If it was a 5 string, it would probably become my main bass, but as it is I will probably use it mostly for teaching and the occasional gig where I don't need the low B. I will be keeping my eyes peeled for a 5 string Japanese Somnus, preferably in a similar design if they exist.

That is a *really* nice instrument. And nice pictures too. So I can enjoy your post both as a bass player and as a (hobby) photographer! :p

Thanks for the compliments. I'll be using this bass at a rehearsal tomorrow night for the first time, so i will get an idea of how it cuts through a ridiculously loud band.
Regarding the photos, they were taken by my wife who is a professional wedding photographer. I think that she enjoyed not having to perform any digital liposuction on the subject matter for once.
Just a quick question for those that know more about Tune basses than I do. When I picked it up, the tuners were wound with the strings coming off the outside edge off the tuning keys. Initially I assumed that the previous owner had gotten this wrong, so I replaced the old set with a less used set I had recently changed, and wound them the way that I normally do on my other basses. Since I have done this I have seen a few other Tunes that have had the strings strung up what I would normally think of a backwards. What is the right way?

Wrapping the strings around the outside of the tuners, opposite of how it's typically done, is the correct way. You'll turn the tuners opposite then, but after a while, you won't even think about it.

It makes sense why they do this. Technically if you locate the tuners like this, that moves them in about 1/2 inch on each side. So, the headstock should in theory be a whole inch skinnier than a typical 2+2 headstock! I've never measured, but it definitely makes for a much more compact and lighter headstock!

You should wind the strings so that you get the straightest string-path between the nut and the tuning post. On Tune basses I think that means that all the strings go the the "outside edge" of the tuning post. Be thankful that it's not an Atlansia where some strings go to the outside and others to the inside and the tuners are a mixture of forwards and reverse geared to compensate!

I always fancied one of the Wood Bass series to complement my TWB-6. Sadly, not yet! :(
Also, I've not played one before, but that SBB looks a bit of a monster! Another one I'd certainly give a go. :)

my second bass was a tune bass, i've had it for just over a year now. i love it! I'm glad other people do, too - when people ask me what bass i have, i don't expect them to know what i play... but i love it all the same!

They'd better refund my money for this then; I paid for it 2 days ago! :mad:

EDIT:
I paid for this at my local Guitar Center, rather than doing it over the phone with the Florida store. The guys at the counter assured me it was all taken care of & the Florida store would have it shipped out by Monday.

Obviously someone screwed up, and I'd better get my money back!
Customer service...that's why I love my Guitar Center! :spit:
