Lately my main practicing rig has been turning the onboard preamp all the way up and using the nine volt battery to power a pair of Earpollution DJ style superbass headphones straight off the bass. Almost an addicting tone it sounds so pure of the true bass tone. Loving it. Used to use an Avalon U5 in the same manner and that was a nice true tone device tha sounded great thru the same headphones. Not bad headphones for 40 something and have beat out alot of other comparable priced headphones . Comfortable too.

I've got a used Zon Sonus 5 that I just purchased off talkbass coming in the mail! I'd like to have a set of strings ready to go for it. Question--do the Zon saddles require a taper core b string? What string do you sonus players use/love?

I'm curious about the difference between the Todd Johnson model and the regular Sonus basses. Other than the extended cutaway and a couple of extra frets, I don't see any other differences.

Am I missing something?

I´m using Zon nickel strings on both my Vinnie four and the Sonus Custom four.

Standard Legacy Elite specs (mahogany body with zirocote tone block, standard pickup/preamp, etc), with black hardware, D-tuner on the E (4-string), matching koa headstock, and satin finish.

So you have a tone plate between the mahogany body and I assume the top on the body is Koa just because you mentioned a Koa headstock, and the tone plate is Zirocote.
This is going to be a AWESOME bass, I'm trying to decide between a Zon Legacy Elite 6 string or a Wal 5 string

The body is larger. The 4 string TJ is the size of the 5 string Sonus, the 5 string TJ is the size of the 6 string Sonus, etc.

You'll love the tone plate Tom. I have a wenge one between my ash body and quilt/spalt maple top

Macassar ebony on mine. My 5 string has a wenge plate, but none of the pictures show it properly.

My Legacy Elite 519 (which was just finished!) has a bubinga tone plate to go with the black redwood burl top.

Mine has a Wenge tone plate under the Koa top (ash body).

The fretted Sonus 5 Custom came out of its case for the first time since I quit my RnB band, to do some tracking on a pal's shoegaze tune. Its fretless cousin may get most of the playing time these days, but this one's still a pleasure to play!

Tom quick question, does the Zirocote tone plate that your having put between the Koa top and the Mahogany body, is the Zirocote denser wood than say Purpleheart tone plate or is there a specific choice for the Zirocote tone plate for a specific sound, sorry I'm asking these questions but I'm really steering myself towards a Zon Legacy Elite and I'm looking at the Koa Top choice and Mahogany body but I'm trying to decide if Purpleheart would be the way to go or Zirocote for the tone plate.
