Does anyone have a fretless Zon with a coated fingerboard? How do you like it compared to their standard fingerboard? Was also curious how it compares with Pedulla.

If you don't mind me asking, about how much and how long did it take to get your neck fixed by him? I've been wrestling with what to do with my Zon and one of my options (if it's logistically possible) is to have him do his fix to mine. From what I understand he also re-frets the whole thing and etc etc.

I do not. I thought about it. But my phenowood fingerboard shows virtually no wear after 9 years of daily playing with rounds, which suggests it's about as hard as it would be with an epoxy coat.
OK, the word I got back on the 2008 Sonus 8 on Reverb is that they took the neck off, and there is no truss rod at all on this bass. Apparently, the neck has more relief than they think would be ideal, but it's described as being very playable.
There we have it.
I'm just not feeling it with that one. It's in a color I don't want, it's described as having a non-adjustable neck with too much relief, and it's heavier than the last 3 Sonus basses I've watched. I hope someone else will be delighted with it.
That's awesome that they did the research and got back to you. So at least now we know. And yeah, I'd say that's an easy pass... unfortunately.

A few things to know... this was a few years ago and I don't know if anything would have changed. But the only way I could contact him was by phone. No email, no text, good old-fashioned call and hope he's home.
That said, he was great to talk to. He's done this operation many times for many a poor soul who have Moduluseses but aren't the original owner so have no warranty. I didn't get a quote since he needed to see it to figure out the best course of action. I shipped him the bass and a couple of weeks later (I didn't hear anything in between) I got it back. Just showed up on my porch! With a note asking to send him a check for... $200? $250? I forget the exact amount but it was shockingly little. So I wrote a check! He had re-planed the neck and that also meant a re-fret.
He makes his own composite basses and I was thinking of getting one (just because I liked him so much) but they were not as cheap and I didn't get back to it. They look pretty cool.
Wow... That is completely reasonable considering the work involved.. Even double that would be worth it compared to the cost of a new neck. Thanks for the info!
The used Vinny you just bought? I have two Sonus custom but don't want to part with either of them. I am curious though why you would already be ready to trade. Is there something about the vinny that started turning you off?
I'm a large man and the small bass looks funny on camera. It can't hang on a wall hanger and is slips though the floor stand.
I have a custom headless Sonus, so I get it. For decades I'd been accustomed to hanging stands, but had to get an A-frame stand just for the headless (two of 'em: one in my car for gigs, the other at home).
Of course my Sonus has a normal-sized body, and doesn't suffer the "twig bass" issue. (Downsized basses have certain advantages, but aren't for me either).
Dude! don't do it (unless you're really set on it, then tell me to get lost) I'm a large dude too (6'2, 280) and yes, it does look and feel weird for a bit. It gets way easier though. The Vinny sounds so good and is so easy to play-almost too easy. You can buy wall mounts that can work with it.
This guy doesn't seem to have a problem with small basses.
Well hey, we all have our quirks. I'm a beanpole, but don't like skinny basses (Steinberger, even Spector) because I think they make me look more gawky. That's one reason why I custom-ordered a headless Sonus and not a Vinny (though there were others).
My assumption is that a Sonus would have the same neck profile and same tone for the most part.
And with the added bonus of the sweet looking 2x2 headstock and traditional body size.

Can't say for sure as I have never played one. They sure are a hell of a lot more common than Vb's, too. You should be able to fetch a nice return in a trade is what i'm saying.
Two string questions for my fellow Zon slingers...
When I first played my Sonus-II 5 right out of the box in 2007, in all likelihood it was strung with which UltraSonics? Nickel or Steel? (Extra points if you know the gauge.)
Secondly, does anybody happen to know who packs them for Zon?

Do you remember the color of the windings? Black for nickel, and I think blue for steels (I never use steels).
Not sure who makes them, but the nickels are tied for my favorite string.
