Official Zon Club Part 5

How long have you been waiting? I got a quote for a headless Sonus custom 6 and I keep umming and ah'ing about going for it or not. Ive seen some people have been waiting years.

I'm in that boat (2.5 years), although I've not been waiting as long as others. The next time you get an immediate response from those guys about putting your deposit down, you should mention that you know of a few guys on TB that have been waiting far longer than the estimate, and that you'd like to see those orders get cleared up before proceeding :) Maybe that will help the cause, lol.

Jesus, no thanks. I love my Zon more than life itself but I certainly got lucky obtaining it new from a store. I'd kill for a 6 string Zon but I couldnt wait 3+ years. By that time Id already have eyed up something else, I have a ridiculous case of GAS. I'm waiting on a response from Haken's bassist as he said to me he was going to sell one of his so if I dont end up buying from him my next port of call is probably going to be Mayones.

They do seem to be quick to respond to potential deposits. Have you tried calling or emailing them? What excuses do they give you for such a long build time?

Yeah man, they definitely respond fast to deposit emails, lol. I spoke to Joe on the phone in December and he said he didn't have an ETA, but that they hadn't forgotten about my order. I'll likely put in a call at some point this month, and then try again about a month before my birthday and see if that can get them to work on my build and knock it out by August / September. I can only hope at this point! FWIW there isn't anything custom or out of the norm about my build, other than asking for gloss black paint instead of matte black.

That gloss black paint will take a long time. It has to be secreted by Chilean vampire bats. No other bats will do it, and the ones in Brazil have a greenish tint to their secretions.
So expect a long delay.
I feel pretty sick seeing the delay times some of you are facing, and the runaround that the shop has been giving.

Just curious: Had you known you would be waiting this long, would you have placed a deposit?

I would not have. The exact model bass that I wanted to buy went up for sale here in the classifieds literally 10 days after I placed my order. Go figure! The wait itself isn't bothersome to me, but quoting people a far shorter delivery time that what is seemingly the norm is what is a bummer to me. If it's going to be 3 years, they should just tell people that it will be three years. There are lots of folks that are willing to wait that long for an order! Wal's wait time is over that now, and they are still dealing with more business than they can handle.

I’ve been raising concerns along with other TBers since 2019 on this forum about long wait times for a Zon build.
Was promised by Joe in an email that I would receive my bass by the end of March apparently that’s not going to happen. Once again some people get their instruments in 10-12 months some people have to wait 5-6 years and there does not appear to be any rational reason why. If I had known that the wait would be this long I would’ve never ordered an instrument from him.

I am guessing it's an organization issue. Very small shops often don't employ project managers who are good at and dedicated to the role. Most small crafting shops would really benefit from having a good PM, and would save the cost of the salary in improved business flow and reputation.

But that's just me.

Maybe Jason DeSalvo can save Zon like he did for Fodera. Wouldn't that be something.

I had long delays with them two times, and I experienced having new finish dates, over and over again, @mrgittleman being the most extreme case. They lost my confidence with the poor communication, repetitive failed finish dates and sometimes very dubious reasons to explain delays.
They have no physical address for the shop (you must contact them to have it)...

IMHO, it's really not a good idea to order from them in this context, when some Talkbass members are still waiting for their basses ordered a long time ago.

Their basses are awesome and have unique sound signature. I sincerely wish them the best.

Agreed. The obvious lies over a 5+ year period of time has really eliminated any enjoyment I might have from receiving an instrument. As stated before, all deposits are nonrefundable so if you do decide to order one please negotiate with them and try to have the smallest deposit possible.

I really hope they can implement some measures that make the business end of the shop on par with the quality of the basses. Its a bit heartbreaking to reconcile the business practices against the amazing quality of the instruments. That being said, the shop has been run like this for a LONG time, and I havent seen any indication that Joe is invested in changing the way they operate.
