It looks very similar and could be. I seem to remember it being an ad no bigger then a 1/2 page but thought the headline in the ad was "The Jazz Bass of The 90's" and there wasn't any other text (besides maybe a phone # & address for Zon). I think the ad was this photo that you included but with the headline I just mentioned. And it could be that I'm just remembering it wrong. Thanks for sharing that :-)

Me too. I didn't actually get my first Zon until 1995 (Sonus V). Then after I moved to Seattle in 1996/1997 I traded it in for a Sonus Special IV at Bass Northwest. Chad came to see my band play once and it must have been a sight seeing a Zon 4 string detuned to B & seeing me thrashin' out with it lol. When I went to buy it he said "I heard you're a low slinger" (strap length). I said not that low but low enough.

My first Zon was a fretless '97 Sonus Special 5 (I replaced the Bartolini harness with a home-brew passive one). I don't have any digitized photos, but here is a video and a recording of it.





For "Blue Diamond" I had D'Addario Half Rounds on the bass, and ran through a 1st version tc electronic SCF.

love the tone and playing! i used to have a sonus special fretless 5 myself. still kicking myself for selling it off.

Join the club, I'm Zonless as well. After I got laid off in Seattle I got to the point where I was like "Do I not pay rent or do I sell my Sonus so that I can pay it?". So I brought it back to Chad at Bass Northwest & they sold it on consignment - I always wonder where my old Sonus V & Special IV are today :/. But I do have a Modulus that I got like 3-4 years ago :)

So some of you know that last year I finally found a Sonus 34” 519 24 fret and finally bought one that was mint. I love the bass but was semi happy with the Spalted Maple Burst. It was a little bit dark for my preference. I have a young nearby luthier that agreed to make me a lighter and brighter Modern bass body to go with my Zon neck and the results are stunning. Quilted Maple top with a 1 piece Poplar body. A Raspberry color top with a Natural back.
It also now sports Nick Fryer quad coils with coil taps and a Nordstrand 3 band preamp. It weighs a very comfortable 8.75 pounds.

I got to say this build look stunning!

I'm just a bit torn with the whole process to get a pretty expensive instrument just for the neck but yeah, those wide 34 inch necks are MAGIC!

(have you tried reaching out to Zon to see if they'd sell the neck only? I'd love to have a similar build being made)

Any sound demo / videos?

I will be using it tonight for a gig. Maybe I can get a couple decent sounding live clips.
I made sure I would be able to bring it back to original and sell with the extra body. A neck from Zon would be fantastic but I wasn’t sure they’d wanna do that.
Pics just don’t do it justice.

I think Zon is like Modulus to where you cannot buy just the neck. At one point you could buy just a Modulus neck as I ordered one through a dealer & was charged $550.
