Oh great! Another P-Bass thread!

same experience here, for my church gig either a P or SR.

if you cant afford both then sell the J and get the P, nothing wrong with that.

As a poor student, I can't afford to keep nice things and travel too. Gotta sacrifice one thing for another.

If you don't think you will regret it later, go for it. I'm kinda in that place right now, thinking about selling my old Jazz bass since it doesn't get as much love, but at the same time that bass has been through hell and back with me.

We'll see. IF I do end up regretting it, you won't see me posting it on TB.

I am the exact opposite. I have been using the P on Sundays, just because it's easier to deal with the tone. Last week I used my J and I don't think I'll ever go back.

To each their own!

That's me in 5 years, lol. Sold my Geddy, bought another P a week ago. My fingers are used to having that split just right there.

Yeah, and I remember you going gaga all over it xD.

PBass rocks! What I did until I found MY PBass, was string my Jazz with flats and back off the bridge pup volume a bit. JBass with some balls! Heck, Joe Osborn didn't seem to miss a PBass.

I want one P with rounds and one with flats!

Any love for reverse ps? They aren't talked about much but they have a interesting sound while still sounding like a p .

I heard they have a different tonality to them but still that signature P-Bass punch.

just solo the front pickup on the jazz. close enough.

Not even, bruh.

OK not that it will be a P bass ever, but I noticed my J ('83 USA Fender) never had the mid-low punch that a P bass has. So I lowered my neck pickup down a lot and it really help shape the tone. Now for better or worse because I still play mu P basses live, every time I break out that J everyone wants to know what I have in it because it just has a sound that kills in the band mix. It's 100% stock except for the front pickup being dropped. Good Luck and if you really like the Geddy, I have seen the advice here before pick up a MIM Fender or VM squire and get that P sound. Good Luck.

If you enjoy a P buy one and sell other things. Life is too short not play what you like.
I caught the p fever about 4 months ago and bought my first one in 30 years playing (had several PJ's though). Got a Classic 50'S and swapped out guts and pups - I am really, really enjoying playing it. I also agree that a J can never do the p thang, not that it can't do great things even getting real close and sounding awesome, it just ain't a pbass anymore than a car is a truck.

The new pup in the avri PBass is amazing. I replaced the Fralin in my parts bass with it. Loved the Fralin, but the ultra vintage fender is just "more".

Yeah I agree. It's fantastic. I also like the sound of the custom shop pickup in the newer American standards as well. They both sound incredible, and I think it boils down to what model you prefer.
