Apart from the fact he was joking, we're just as removed from the people who 'invented' the language as the Americans are. Any claim of ownership of a language is plain dumb.

Most political polls have far fewer participants. 60% of respondents usually = around 120 out of 200. And we all know poll questions are skewed to get the answer the poll takers want.

3000 is a very large number for a survey. Next time you see a Gallup poll, look for the number of participates, it usually run about 1060. According to Gallup, they can make statistical interpolations from that low number.
Anyway, this poll should not surprise a soul, just watch Leno when he does his question segment and it plain to see that the majority is ignorant of history.
I believe it has been said that those who fail to learn from history are condemned to repeat it.
3,000 is definitely enough - if they were a representative group, carefully chosen - but I doubt this and it's far more likely they chose to focus on the kind of answers/results that would sell papers/airtime!

Wow, that seems odd. More people vote in a poll about whether someone should go with a tort guard, or a mint green guard. To post any findings based on such numbers is irresponsible, in my opinion.
It's a question of choosing representative samples - basic statistics!
The question is how the respondents were chosen - if randomly or self-selecting, then it's invalid - but you could easily have a statistically valid sample size of 3,000.

Well the much smaller British Isles, were holding off the vast might of the Nazi force very well without any help from the US - we won the Battle of Britain - which was seen as a big turning point in the war, with zero US help.
Mainland Europe - France,Belgium,Poland etc. wasn't faring l so well - maybe you should reserve your taunts for them...?

Truth is, you wouldn't have lasted long without us - or Russia for that matter, and we surely couldn't have done it alone either. A united effort defeated Hitler's army - and Italy and Japan as well.
I'm of the opinion that the only valid political poll is taken on election day.
I think the main problem with the differing perceptions of people between the UK and America is simply the amount of people in both countries. I think, percentage wise, there's the same amount of idiots in both countries, but as there's much MORE people in America, it seems as though there are a lot more idiots.
For instance, say there was 1,000 people in the UK and 90% of them are idiots. This means there are 900 idiots. Now, there are 10,000 people in the US, this menas 9,000 idiots. Percentage wise, there's still the same amount of idiots. It's just, an army of 9,000 idiots seems a lot bigger... and unfortunately the clever and cool people probably get lost a bit more than in a smaller group

I think you're wrong on all but the last of those points - so at first Stalin had a pact with Hitler and it was the fact that USSR stayed out, that allowed the Nazis to sweep through Europe.
But then the big turning point of the mainland war, was when Hitler over-reached himself, took on the USSR at the height of the Russian Winter and lost huge numbers of troops - nothing to do with the US!
I'll give you Japan - but Europe was already decided before the US entered the war!
All that the US troops did was get to Berlin in time to divide up the spoils, start the Cold war and charge Britain huge amounts of money - which we only finished paying off, last year! So now at last, we owe you nothing!

IIRC my college stats course, well chosen sample groups
of populations approach statistical significance of when
N > 30. N = or > 3000 decreases the margin of error but is
unnecessarily high sample number.
A good survey would define the population being sampled,
and the margin of statistical error, but given the source...
it's irrelevant.
