OK friends... Here's a REAL relic...

Just me, its your bass, and I'm good with what you did, though no reason for you to care.

I probably woukd have refinished the front, just like you did and left the back with the scribes and then clear coat EVERYTHING!

Let's start by saying... Yes... I'm 51 years Young. I don't understand making a new instrument look old. Although... I do LOVE NATURAL Mojo.

There was a thread about "Your first bass, and the song that You learned on it, recently... Pretty neat.
This was My 1st. The song was Aerosmith's Kings and Queens, as I posted. I was 14.

I have "talked" about My 1st bass, a few times. And have stated that I'm lucky to still have it, even though I haven't even looked at it in over 20 years.

A few months ago, I received a message from the Sister of one of My BEST friends EVER, that He had passed away. GOD DAMMIT JEMI!!! YOU PROMISED THAT YOU WERE COMING TO VISIT, THIS SUMMER!!!

The bass I'm talking about, is My 1981, Gibson Victory, Standard. Out of sight/out of mind. Just a TOY that I got for My 14th bday. Very soon after this, I acquired an '86 Kubcki, '88 Spector NS2-A, and My BABY... My '79 Music Man Sabre. I still have all of them. The Victory became nothing more than a "Dartboard, and a tablet." Stupid Me. Actually... In retrospect... I'm happy that I kept an Ice Pick next to Her, for all to "use."

After hearing of Jemi's "departure"... I got nostalgic, and sentimental. I went to the closet, and revisited My 1st.
As I looked her over, I had noticed how many of the "scribers" are no longer with us, and... had meant so much to Me. I can count 7.
I then proceded to do My best to preserve the "carvings/memories" of My friends. Both alive, and, well... those gone.

Instead of sending it out to be professionally done, I thought it best to do it with MY Hands, as they did with theirs.

2 weeks later, and many hours of sanding/painting/drying/sanding/painting,and a few tears... She looks pretty cool.

Gonna let Her dry for a couple of weeks, before the final wet sand, buffing, and reassembly. She hasn't made a sound in over 20 years, but... I think that I may just have to write a TRIBUTE song to My friends, and use the 'ol Victory on the recording...

Now... onto our regular arguing about weight, width, and spacing.

A bit odd that you thought of the Victory as a toy. I considered buying one and remember it being a solid professional quality bass that was not cheap.

My 1st bass was a used Ric 4001. I took me a long time to get where I could play without looking at the neck. The Victory's neck has a taper and whenever I tried it in the music store, I found that within a few moments I could accurately shift up and down the neck without looking.

Problem is I needed a good amp more than I needed another bass; so my minimum wage duckies went towards a new SVT.

Course if you didn't consider the bass a toy, you wouldn't have this cool story and memento.

Cool project and sorry for your loss. The new red front definitely looks better than the original finish. You probably need to install a holster for the ice pick though.

A TOY, in comparison to the basses that I got, soon afterwards. Not that I didn't absolutely LOVE this bass... but, in comparison to My other 3 at the time... well... You know.
Anyhow, I have no regrets for what has become of Her. I'm actually pretty happy that She "sacrificed" Herself for Me, and very lucky to still have Her, and all the original parts. Except the strap buttons...

Nice tribute to a friend gone too soon. I know how that feels. It hurts. Wish there were better words but I'm glad you have something to remember him by and that his loss helped you see how important it is to preserve these memories. RIP Jemi. You were well loved.

What a great story. Sorry for your loss. So far I’ve only lost 1 musical mate at age 66 and he was 8 years older at the time of his passing. I was still gigging with him when he died. Sure leaves a hole.

Sorry about Your friend. Yep. It sucks. And... as I stated earlier... when this poor bass was enduring all of the neglect, and abuse... little did I realize at the time, what an AMAZING memento She would become.

I feel pretty lucky.

My very first strap is the one thing no one will ever take from me. It's got graffiti and autographs all over it from friends. Very dear to me.

The best part though, is that it was the strap used by the guy who originally inspired me to play, one Mr. Sean O'Leary from Canada. Not one like it, but his! Terrific, very melodic player, & my heaviest influence, period. I got to listen to him play 1-2 times a week during church for about 2 years. Talk about an edu-ma-cation!

That strap will go to the grave with me...

Hey Y'all... since You've taken the time to send such kind words, and share some of Your stories...

I figured that I'd ask a LIL "Advice."

1st off, here's a better look at what Her color really (Testors, C.A.R., yes... the stuff that We painted our model cars with) is. It still isn't a proper representation of how beautiful She is turning out to be. I'll try to capture this a bit better soon.
2nd... since I've decided to go "all out", and that She was initially created to be Gibson's "answer" to Fender's "P" (we all KNOW that was an IMPOSSIBILITY...), I actually have a CAD drawing of the pickguard.

In tribute to what She was meant to "compete" with... should I have a TORT one cut? Or... is that silly?

Although... this bass has become anything it WAS, originally. Just thinking of whether I should "go for it."
