Ruby manufacturers tubes as well as buys/grades tubes for various parameters. Depending on the selection/grading criteria, the quality and performance is generally much higher than stock off the shelf inventory. Of course, those that fail to make the grade go elsewhere. Grading increases the cost to the manufacturer but also eliminates much of the trouble associated with manufacturing and warranty, so it's a win-win situation for those willing to pay a little more up front.

The intent of my previous post was to dispell common rumors and old wives tales about tubes.

Also, please be aware that some people design their tube, even though they don't own the factory. For instance, the EL34BSTR is one of the best hard rock (Marshall) El34's I've played. And that was designed by Ruby.

Also, Groove Tubes has many, many proprietary designs. Somebody could actually write a book on just tubes. Oh wait, Aspen already did. :D

However, my definition of great service is service that you rarely if ever have to use. It's more impressive to me to have no mentions of service and support (or very few) associated with a brand.

That being said, having a problem resolved is definitely better than having a problem not resolved.:)

I was suprised to find that after doing a bunch of tube swapping in my older SWR head, the tube that sounded the best for my application (upright bass, clean tone) was just a new inexpensive GT chinese 12ax7 , which was what came stock in my head.

My amp didn't sound good to me with so-called "high gain" brands of tubes, or other "highly rated" more expensive tubes I tried.

I am sure of course that any tube swapping results will be highly subjective to what the user expects or desires to hear as an "improvement" in tone.

I tend to think many amp designers actually design the circuitry with a particular type of tube in mind, not just so they can use "cheap" tubes. I am no tube expert by any means, these are just my observations.

I know some guys are using the Shuttle for upright bass with good results and am interested in trying one. Time to lug the doghouse down to the music store again. :D

let us know how that goes. I'm not an UB player but I would think the Shuttle would kill as an amp for one.

It's not just urban legend folks. After taking all kinds of time patiently helping me out and explaining everything, fixing my problem, the "service tech" says for me to call anytme I have a question, that he is happy to talk to me, and then indentifies himself as Jeff Genzler.

Let me just say that I don't know if this amp has any shortcoming or faults with relation to my personal application. So far, it is perfect and kicking some serious butt. But even if it did, I would keep it based on the kind of service I just received.

I had a similar situation with Larry Hartke. I was figuring out whether to stay with Hartke or check out an Ampeg. I called his cell # that he has in his ads & left a VM. No sooner that I hung up my phone that he called me right back. He told me about the new HyDrives coming out & the technologies with the aluminum/paper cones. He asked for my address & found out I lived a town away from him. The next day I walked up to my house & there were 2 packs of strings, a tuner, and a Hartke t-shirt sitting on my front porch. He delivered these items himself! I called to thank him & he invited me to come by his HQ and play on his proto type 1000 watt stack that Vic Wooton & Steve Bailey are touring with. I was floored! I stopped by, played on the amp, he told Jaco stories, showed me Stu's signature Fender in custom canary yellow, jammed on his Hartke bass. That was some awesome customer service. I'll be a Hartke user til my fingers fall off.

that was me and my assistant, Frank. Wow, that was quite a few years ago.

Side story to that- that night, after that event, all the guitars we brought were stolen- four guitars worth about $4k each. One was supposed to go to Steeley Dan the next day at Mohegan Sun. Oh well.
