Okinawan sanshin build

I didn't work on the tailpiece yet, but probably will sometime soon.

I did the first coat of tung oil tonight. :D

I love this maple.

I also love how easy the tung oil is to apply. I wonder how many coats it's going to need.

I'll get better pictures after I get more oil on there.

I love the way this is coming out! It's got a real organic look to it. The wood you chose is beautiful, and blends together quite well. It has a certain flow to it. Looking forward to more pictures and progress.

Those inlays on the neck look cool.
Loving the rounded square theme of the whole thing as well.

Man, the moment you rounded over the front and back, this started to come together really nicely.

Thanks everyone!

The tung oil says to do 1 coat at a time and let it dry 12 hours in between. This is my first time using tung oil other than tests on scraps, so I don't really know how long it will take or how far to go with it. It definitely needs more right now though. It's very dry looking.

She seems happy about me making her something. And when I make other stuff and show her, she always asks if it's for her... Like today, I made my first pen on the lathe.

She claimed it. Haha.

How very nice! Your skills and talent are admirable, and the work you produce quite beautiful.

I just received a pen made out of bamboo from one of me budo students today, which reminds me of the pen you made.

That's great! Can I claime the second one??!:p:p

Thank you. :) It's pretty fun making things.

That's awesome that you got one from your student! How nice. :D

I have a question.

Are the tuning pegs held in place through a press fit, because they are tapered?

Is this part of the issue you were having with them staying in place so that the strings stayed in tune? Did you solve it? (sorry if you've already answered. I must have missed it.)

Yeah, they're a press fit. I used peg oil on them and that gives them more traction.

Thanks for taking the time to answer my question.

I'm assuming traditional sanshin are built this way.
It seems like such an arbitrary way to have a stringed instrument stay in tune.

It's not any different than what violins, violas, cellos, etc. use.

Love your drying rack. Boom Boom.

Yeah, it was a lot easier to set up than the one for guitars.
