Old School SR800 or Newer SR500 (AFR vs Bartolini pickups)

So Im debating picking up one of the older SR800s from the 90s, made in japan. I remember thinking these basses sounded and played incredibly well back in the 90s, but I didn't know much about gear back then.

My other option is a more recent SR500 (I assume made in china or korea). I see this 500 has bartolinis, but again, I remember back in the day thinking that the AFR pickups in the 800s sounded great.

What are your opinions? Any input on how you like the AFR pickups in the older models?

(I would be ordering these online so I don't have the opportunity to play them and compare first)
