Old washburn P bass copy

I recently bought an old Washburn Pbass copy off of ebay. It has been sitting without strings on it for a few years at least.

Do I need to take any precautions when stringing it for the first time?

The bass is for my 11 year old son who has been playing upright in school for 2 years. So I am thinking of using light gauge strings at first, if that makes any sense?

Not a stupid question, I would assume the neck might need some adjustment with the truss rod, I would say since your son is used to playing upright maybe string it with some flats with a medium string height. You could always take it to a guitar shop or Guitar Center and get a $20-25 setup.
