OMFG! Full POG2 Spec and Qballs / 22 Caliber!!!

I will take the XO BMS ANY DAY over the big box.

Heathen!

I sold my reissue BMS to buy the XO, cried for a while, sold the XO and bought another reissue.

The XO seems to distort on low notes, the rate slider is bad and wrong and silly and bad and wrong, and it sounds thin and weedy like... well, like me. You'll have to take my word for it that I am decidedly thin and weedy.

Plus the old one is better looking. :p

On a second thought, I'll probably be keeping my microPOG and use the Lazy Sprocket as a volume sweller. Modular is probably better in most cases, and it seems so in this case, too. So unless reviews come out proving that the sounds on the POG2 completely devastate the ones in the microPOG, I'll stick to the micro.

Then you miss out on the option of having your bass tone stay solid while your octaves alone get the attack delay. It may not sound like much now, but it is a pretty neat little effect. Really adds to the multiple instrument effect.

But I *like* attack delay on my main bass line, that's what I've been using my Slow Gear clone for, all along.. having it work only on the octave may be a bit too subtle for a noisy band..

I've never played the old BMS, but I liked some of the sounds I got from the XO. Has anyone recorded an A/B of the two?

I wish I had, but the way my pedal budget goes I had to shift one to buy the other.

The main thing that convinced me (beside that incalculable "tone" issue) was this: Get the preamp gain trimpot set just-so for your playing, then give it some low G, third fret on the E string, with the sub-octave slider up. Does it fart? It probably will. The old BMS won't, it will just pump it out, regardless of whether your amp can cope or not. That is what convinced me the new BMS doesn't have the 24v nuts of the original.

That kind of weakness seemed to persist across the whole range for me. Where the old BMS would just sound remarkable practically regardless of where I put the sliders, the XO model sounded weedy by comparison. I appreciate that they are calibrated differently and the same slider positions won't produce the same results on both pedals, but the XO is literally not capable of the same fat sounds as the original. It just isn't. To me it sounds like a cheap knock-off of the original. I am not exaggerating. When you compare it to the original it just cannot compete.

I am as disappointed as anybody about it.

I should say I'm not trying to pump up used prices on a discontinued pedal - seriously I couldn't care less because the last thing I'm going to do is sell mine, I already sold an XO to re-buy a reissue - it's just the truth, they are very different and to me the old one sounds much better than the new one.

Unfortunately nobody's ever going to produce clones of it, because it's such a hilariously complicated circuit. So if you spot the difference then buy up the originals because I think it's going to be a bit of a synth classic in a couple of years.

I disagree. Very different is an overstatement. Any analog octaver is going to struggle on a low G. I probablly wouldn't have thrown into this whole issue at all if it wasn't for you calling us all deaf in another thread.

I think every TB user has to be wary that there are multiple opinions. Particularly in this case where its a small community and a niche pedal where only one or two positive/negative comments can push someones GAS into purchase. Hopefully at the very least all this disagreement will make people try both for themselves!

I honestly don't think it is. They both attempt the same thing, one of them - for my money - does a considerably worse job of it.

I'm not talking about tracking performance. That's something else (although the BMS when set up correctly - both of them - can track a low G pretty well on a bass with a solid fundamental). If it actually does track, the XO will fart all the way through it trying to produce the sub-octave. The original simply will not. It will double the note for you, cleanly.

I agree that reproduction of this particular note or those below it isn't a practical issue, but I think it relates to the general poor sound quality of the XO model. It may perform the same function as the original, but it never sounds as good regardless of what you ask it to do.

I agree with you, and I wish I could recommend the XO BMS because the original BMS is one of my favourite bass effects. But for me it's like comparing an original and a cheap knock-off. If you don't notice any difference, or you're just happy with what you've got then stick with what you've got, but there is a huge difference between the two. I don't think I'm exaggerating.

Maybe a mod could split this into another thread because we are way off-topic here.

we are way off-topic here.

On topic.

I personally didn't really did the Micro Pog when I tried it because I was more into the ridiculous analog OC-2 sound.

But I have always paid attention to those big-Pog users who spouted the virtues of being able to rein in the digitalness with the low pass filter.

I'm hoping that since more people will buy the Pog2, that someone will actually record a sample of it in effect. Whilst that alone probablly won't be enough to justify having one for me, it would be nice to actually have a pedal to refer people to when they are after a clean octave up sound that doesnt sound like a digital icepick.

The old BMS did sound better, but not enough for me to keep it due to the larger size. I also don't use it's octaves, and the filter is close enough, if not the same (despite the touchy sliders, and more available resonance and range on the XO), therefor negating enough of the difference for my use.

Im pretty sure I recorded clips of both before selling the big one, I'll dig through some old files as some point and post the clips if they're around.
