Also, the pricing depends exactly on when you purchase the mac. If it is just after a hardware revision, they tend to be similarly priced or in many cases I've seen, cheaper. Just before a hardware revision they are more expensive. That's just the way they work and it's why most Mac users will buy new Macs immediately after a hardware revision.

Well...great though it is, I wouldn't go that far :) It only works for some games, but when you think about it, that's still quite amazing. I was playing the old dos game 'jetpack' the other day using dosbox on Linux (also available for windows, btw) and it struck me then that it's really quite clever to be able to emulate hardware or other OS's so perfectly in software that programs can run on systems they were never designed for.

TBH I think I get on so well with Linux because I'm not a big gamer. If I was more of a gamer I'd have to think twice. I tend to just play what's available and occasionally trying my luck with buying older games cheap and running them on Wine. Sometimes they work, sometimes they don't. Worms 2 worked brilliantly, Theme Park World didn't work at all. Master of Olympus was flawless, Red Alert 2 runs too slowly to play. But as I say, I will just take what's available to kill a few minutes here and there rather than whine about what's not available. And I'm now at the stage where I certainly wouldn't go back to Windows because I've experienced something so much better...not just the software but the community.

Back to the topic.
Vaio's are prone to overheating issues, but usually overheating will cause the thermal protection to engage and shut the computer off. I would google +vaio +cooling +issues. Also, run diagnostics on your harddrive. If you're having harddrive issues, windows will try to recover data from the bad sectors when you access it, this will kill your access time. For grins and giggles, you'll want to get this and run diagnostics on your ram to make sure you don't have a faulty chip. After you do all that, run some demo's and compare them to people with the same configuration to make sure you video is not tanking. It is probably time you start thinking about a new system anyway, sorry to be the bearer of bad news, but she's served you well and I'm sure she can still surf the net and do documents. In reality all you probably need is a good cleaning, fresh coat of heat sink compound, and maybe a new harddrive. HD's for those can be had for $80 or so, but do research first. Vaio's HD cavity is shallow and not all laptop HD's will fit, but most will. Good luck and keep us posted.

BTW, Komakino, absolutely LOVED the Pentium of Borg clause in your signature. I still have two bugged FPU pentiums (p75 and p90). Not that you'd be interested, but if you want one I'll let you have it, I'll even cover the shipping. Don't know if it'll even post, heck I even have the letter from Intel saying they'd replace it with a functioning unit. Wonder what they'd do now if I sent that in?

+1. Fairly frequently, me thinks. Probably not necessary, but I'm a loon for garbage and tend to clean up every few weeks... As I said in an earlier post, I run several spywre cleanups every few weeks, clean up garbage ever few weeks, and I have Diskeeper set to run automatically every night. I'm sure it's NOT necessary, but I'm weird with clutter, and stuff...

And I've never had an issue. Ever.

Six of my own, which means I put my first computer together about 10 years ago, when I was 14. Seeing that you are looking down at me, when did you start fiddling with the computers, then?

Thanks :) Wish I could claim authorship though, sadly it was something I saw somewhere that made me laugh. And thanks for the offer, but i already have one thanks! It's sitting comfortably in an anti-static bag in my attic.

I think all you windows owners completely miss the point that all that maintenance should not be necessary on a well written, 21st century operating system. Unix has NEVER had the problem with needing to be defragmenting, and the ONLY time it should be necessary to reboot is when new hardware is added, not for installing programs or device drivers!
