OMG I Hate my computer

I've got a Sony VAIO laptop thats almost 4 yrs old and it used to be able to run Battlefield 1942 with no problems... I've reformatted it a couple times since then, and I recently did that about a week ago and its unable to run it playable anymore... its too choppy. I don't understand whats going on, I formatted the entire c:/ and reinstalled windows, installed battlefield, defragmented and it still is running badly.

Do computers just naturally slow down over time? Or is there anything I can do (besides buying RAM)

I really really really want one of those Dell XPS laptops... one of them has 2GB of RAM and a 512MB Videocard!!

Windows computers naturally slow over time, but if you've formatted the whole drive and reinstalled windows then that's not the cause. Do you have the right drivers for your graphics card installed? Or have you changed any game settings (like are you trying to run at a higher res than before?)

Nah I actually put it at the lower setting than it was before and its running worse. Drivers for my video card are updated as well. My fan has been pretty loud maybe I'll clean out the inside of my comp.

Sounds like a plan. If the CPU is over heating it will run slower...laptops usually have powerstepping and things to run them slower when things hot up.

Really though, this just adds to that arrogant thread. What makes Mac users think their computers have no problems.

And as others have said, unless you really need a laptop Armueller, Desktops are much better for gaming, easier to upgrade, and not to mention cheaper. 2gigs of ram and that video card in a laptop and that stuff in a desktop is a world of difference in price and quality.

Yeah.. everyone's advice that I've read is right on the mark!

CPU probably is hot. More ventilation MAY help. More RAM may help. 'Updated drivers' is smooth-move too. But for sure laptops due tend to wear out quickly. I've replaced enough HDD's/keyboards in client's laptop systems to know.

But it does seem a little out of place to be gaming on a system that by design was never meant for that extreme (abuse?) use. They really aren't robust enough for it.

I think its just time to trade up. :eyebrow:

lol, I have a desktop from 98' that still runs awesome, XP Home, a couple old games (Quake, Doom, Time Commando FTW!) and runs apps like Morpheus, DC++, NEtbeans. Not too shabby. A computer can last 10 years, if it's well treated.

But then again, I use my new laptop more than the desktop.

Try reinstalling certain drivers, get the newest versions, and get rid of windows. I need to aswell.

the guy wants to play battlefield and you're telliung him he should have gotten a mac?

I get it, mac are computer illiterate people's excuse for paying 20% extra for the same hardware. :D

So when I am in a computer lab of all Macs and numerous people complain about how their computers lock up or they need to learn how to force quit because programs freeze up, that is just them 'working' :p

Then there is my roommate whose Macbook Pro's screen just went blank randomly, and no matter what he did he could not fix it. He kept restarting it, played with the battery, tried numerous things to get it working. Eventually he had to send it back for a new one.
