Wow I always loved the way these looked and had GAS for years for these, BUT THIS? Funny thing is that there is absolutely no reason(IMHO) to do this since the 3 stacked controls seemed to remain. I guess the possibilities as to "why" are endless. Maybe there was a huge crack or gouge around that control area? I guess I shouldn't be harsh about it since I don't know this poor bass's history but when I saw it I was like
All at the same time lol..

Forgive me if this is a TBr...I revisit this one now and then. It's not any one thing...i'm just kind of shocked by the amount of plastic surgery(well plastic and otherwise) this poor L2K has endured.

Meh. None of them are collector pieces. They're just production basses.

The Warwick looked like it it had been played pretty hard. Lots of areas where the finish is worn through. So it wasn't pristine mods or not.

The G&L is a little bit of a hot mess with a crooked bridge and whatnot. But, again, it'll never reach '59 P bass status. It's just a bass.

No need to he offended by hack jobs. You can find L2K and Warwick basses all over. They aren't rare. Just buy a different one.

It's possible the control area was damaged, for example by a high velocity faceplant. The impact to the controls could break the thin wood the pots go through. It would be an affordable, quick way to get the bass working again, which could be a priority to a working musician with one bass and little time or money.

It looks to be a 90's era wenge-neck model. Even with the awful plate on the front, I don't think the asking price is too out of line. Maybe a better control plate (eg. exotic wood?) could be created and make the bass look nice.

To be honest I kind of like it. Gives the bass an interesting retro look that reminds me of a "coffee table" style bass you'd see from the 70s or something. If I had the chance to play this in person and it all checks out I'd probably buy it.

I refinished my ProM years ago and was surprised at how thin the wood is in the top above the control cavity on the reverse. My guess is that this poor bass suffered a crack on the face around the pots. Or the owner was going for a half-baked steampunk look. It does have a wenge neck...

This. I’m pretty sure I’ve seen some Carl Thompson and Ken Smith basses that looked kinda like that. Ok, those knobs are bad, but that’s easy to replace.

My vote is that it was to repair impact damage. It probably could have been done another way and been less obvious, but it also could have been done much worse.
