If a "prospective buyer" is scared off by that post update they were never going to buy the bass anyway.
If I'm genuinely interested in a bass marked "sold pending payment" I'll message the seller to see where things stand: if I'm not truly interested in paying I won't bother, and it saves the seller the hassle of having to reply to another tire kicker.
After reading this, I want to curse loudly and break something.

This is incredibly subjective. That said, I never alter my listing or add any info like that until my sale item is sold. I'd rather keep the interest coming..
If I am looking and I see a "pending this or that" comment, if I am really interested, I will reach out and say hey, if the sale falls through, let me know.
If not, there will be other basses. Funny how that works around these parts. lol

Yes. Sometimes the bank will do it in a few partial payments. I forget the reason. I do remember it's frustrating that you can't simply use funds as you wish. Usually clears within 10 days max I think.
I like that method but it does strip some protection from the buyer. These PayPal and other fees kill me.
Not at all true. Just as @BobKos said earlier. If someone backs out, other buyers wonder what the first person knew that they didn't. This has happened to me more than a handful of times here, on eBay and reverb. The minute an item is sold or marked as such, other buyers who have contacted me about and watchers vanish. It is an interesting phenomenon but does happen.
"Sold pending payment" means I sold it but can't afford to ship it right now because PayPal froze my account. If you're in a hurry, come pick it up and bring cash.

FWIW that's not my own experience at all. But if it's happened to you, then it happened. I won't dispute it.
I don't do eBay anymore however. Their policy of siding with the buyer regardless of merits, "their don't ask don't tell" attitude towards fraudulent behavior and questionable business practices, combined with the impossibility of ever speaking to a human being is enough disincentive for me to want to continue doing anything through eBay. These days I'll only use TB or Reverb. Otherwise I just do local direct sales.
Yeah, I get it. I hate when people don't do things the way I think they should be done. Absolutely preposterous!
I travel to buy a lot of gear. I've had one seller that knew I came from about 100 miles away tell me that he had someone else coming that offered more money in what I thought was an effort to squeeze more money out of me.
He eventually caved to the original asking price. I think I may have commented that I'd be crossing state lines to get home.

Must feel great to let all that out and then realize that any normal person could deduce on their own what "on hold pending payment" means.
