Didn't want to crap on a sellers post so I thought I would vent my frustration here. Cash is king, if you have it, what ever I'm selling is yours.

What's up with these posts within 'for sale' ads that state 'on hold pending payment?'

Somebody has to ask their mom for money? They have to collect coins from behind the couch cushions? Their great uncle owes them $50 and they're going to collect now? They have to ask their boss Cleetus at the Pump 'N Munch for a two-month advance?

Obviously this was a bass I was on the fence about. I never realized an option could be 'hey if I can find some money, I'd like to buy this. Please hold it for me until I can figure out how to pay for it

This is all somewhat tongue-in-cheek but really, people are asking to hold items for sale without having the payment readily available?

I have done it before as a seller. Honestly, I just get such a good "vibe" from most TB members that I don't sweat the small stuff.

A couple times guys have messaged me on a Wednesday and asked to wait until Friday (payday) or something similar. I'm fine with that (especially if the item has been slow to move anyway).

But it's totally up to you how you handle yo bidniss. :cool:

Some people don't check their PM's often enough, so in this case the seller decided to let everyone know that it's sold...pending payment from the person that wants it.

I try to pay within minutes .... like that amazing G&L L2000 I got earlier :)

And when I bought a bass from the OP - can't remember which one it was.
Oh yeah this one: SOLD - Ibanez BTB776PB 6 string I like the BTB a lot. Thanks.

Sorry you lost the pending payment one, there will be more.

Buyers and sellers aren't logged on and monitoring their inboxes 24/7. Sometimes it takes a while to go through the steps of a complete purchase. Once the seller has sent the invoice (i.e., PayPal address), the item is marked "sold pending payment." When payment is made, the item is marked "sold." What's the problem? If I want to buy an item marked "sold pending payment", I PM the seller and ask them to ping me if the pending sale falls through.

E.g. - I don't usually keep much of a balance in my PayPal account.
If a seller wants PayPal, it might take a day or two for a transfer to PayPal to finalize -- which I disclose to sellers.
So far, everybody's been OK with it, but I couldn't blame a seller who insisted on instant payment.
Even EBay gives you 5 days to remit, except in the case of 'Buy It Now.' (Which really means 'now' ...)

I, generally, don't do anything to my sale ads other than try to keep them updated if an item sells. I try to check often enough that I don't miss replies. What I will do is make sure that if I get a secondary offer, I will communicate to buyer #2 that they have next right of refusal if the previous buyer backs out, and I will ask for a time limit from each potential buyer.

I've had the same thing as Two Fingers where a TBer has asked for a couple of extra days for whatever reason, I'm happy to oblige if it's communicated from the beginning. Haven't really ran into too many flakes on here, everyone I've dealt with has been an upstanding TB citizen.:thumbsup:

You're making it out to be much more dramatic than it really is.

"On hold pending payment" generally goes up for 24 hours or less, unless it's a buyer you've done business with many times before.

The buyer has said something along the lines of "I'll send the payment as soon as I (get home from work, get paid tomorrow, transfer money to my checking account, clear it with my spouse, etc.)".

It's really just a way for sellers to not have to field a bunch of replies for no reason if the bass is already sold: I've personally put it up on my listings for anywhere from an hour to a few days before payment came through.

I have marked many items 'pending' … it can take on many meanings, and there could be several reasons for it … but that would be between me and person that it is pending for … I could not imagine a situation that I would have any interest in disclosing/justifying my decision to sell to a particular person, or the manner in which I and he/she decide to do it … should the scenario not work out to either of our expectations, I would simply mark it 'available again', and life goes on …

If there is a second/third/whatever in line (as there often is for my stuff), I will notify them of that accordingly and if/when it would be available for them … I consider it common courtesy and respectful dealings … but there is never a justification needed to anyone outside of the immediate transaction …

JMHO … as always ...

I had a TB deal to buy a bass and put $100 down but the seller got a better offer in the interim, asked me if I'd let him rescind the sale. I did. No hard feelings.

Yep, back in the pre PayPal stone age, sellers "bought" an item, them mailed a money order for payment. When i sold over the webs, that was an unambiguous part of every add i posted, "item ships upon receipt of payment". If the sale was in an online format like TB, i would always post "sold pending payment" in the listing when i'd been told to expect payment. It let folks know it was (hopefully) sold and was also an opportunity to line up prospective alternate buyers if the original guy failed to follow up.

Typically the seller is waiting for online payment, not cash. The buyer and the seller may not be on the phone to eachother so it may take a few hours for each communication... Or, maybe the seller is really holding it for someone. Bottomline is... ask the seller if you want time. There are no rules. But those on-hold typically mean the sale has been agreed and the seller is waiting for the buyer to pay, nothing more.
