How do you control your lighting whilst on stage?

We mostly have venue lighting today.. When we used our own lights (a few bands back) it was a controller back at the console. The soundguy ran the lights.

You can use a PC and Android tablet or a Mac and iPad or iPhone. The dongle connects to the Mac/PC and the DMX cable goes from the dongle to the lights. I use a mac so I create a network on that, then connect with the iPhone/iPad to control everything wireless. Maybe with a PC you might need a router, dunno? It's a bit pricey and the software took a little trial and error but I think it's worth it.

You can use the software to create light shows on your computer without having your lights set up. Theres a simulator so you can see what you're doing.You can create on one computer and save it to a memory stick, then load it on your laptop.

The software is Chauvet but you can use most any brand lighting with it.

I use the iPad app Lumiair and an interface from DMXKing - it's an Entec clone... I have an iPad dedicated to lights. I use that setup when doing sound or if it's a gig where the lights are just ambience. If I want light activity while playing bass, singing and doing sound. I use the foot controller that came with my fixtures and slave the fixtures together. Probably I'll use the mic activated setting and turn the mic way down. Not as cool but it works and nobody complains...

You do not want to be running a lighting control app and master Fader at the same time, on the same iPad... Just say no...

I just put my lighting package together, and used it for one show so far.

I bought a small Linux system called an Odroid-c1, and I run Ubuntu with a lighting package called QLC+. Then I use VNC to talk to that headless computer with an old ipad.

The computer runs the lights via a USB to DMX adapter, the ipad is used to tell the computer to change the sequence via wifi.

I did buy a MIDI foot controller, but can't get it to work yet.

I picked a different preprogrammed sequence for each song before we started is all. I hope to get better and be able to change at verse/chorus next time.

QLC+ is free and runs under windows too, but I didn't want to take a notebook to gigs, so went with a tiny dedicated Linux box.
