one band, 2 bass players?

I'm in a powermetal band (Wotan's Apotheosis). The guitarist (who also plays piano, violin, drums, bass and is a guitar teacher) approached me about writing a bit for a song with both of us on bass. sounds interesting and we'll see what devlopes. He plays a more progressive mid ranged sound while I tend to make my own groove and fills in the pocket.

The band Ned's Atomic Dustbin did it; one bass doing rhythm, one more for melody. One was a Ric.. the other, not sure.

Pics that I have seen imply that it was an Ibby, but I have also seen a P-bass in other images. N.A.D. had effective arrangements that essentially let the 6-stringer be a lead player, most of the time.

Two basses in one band start to sound like a good idea. Personally, though, I wouldn't do it yet since I don't have nearly the enough knowledge to think how to fit two basses in songs, especially rock songs. Besides, being the one bassist is kinda cool and I don't like competition.

P.S. That demo with two basses sounds awesome! That's something no amount of detuning in a guitar could do.

I always wondered what it would be like to have a band with two bassists where one sticks to the very bottom end of the bass, playing very rhythmic lines, while the other plays up the neck and plays more melodic lines.
