One stays, one goes - which one should I keep?

I'd keep the 5 because that's what I play...but realistically I'd keep both.
The MIJ P is sentimental to you and would be hard to replace should you ever want to do that down the road.
The 5 is certainly "more versatile" but it's hard to argue against a P bass since they work so well in literally every style of music.

I'd sell the fiver and keep the unique MIJ p-bass. Then I'd go find a used cheapo, like a MIM Fender or MIK or MIC Squier, or a Peavey. I think there was someone selling a US-made Foundation here in the TB classifieds. For a couple hundred bucks you can get something that's totally playable. You should always have a backup bass.

Trading it.....for another bass? Wouldn't it be repeating the vicious (but absolutely enjoyable) cycle?
I would try it out for a bit longer and make the decision then. It sounds like you're still on the fence about the five string. I agree on the logic of keeping the MIJ though. Two points determine this 1) which bass can you say with certainty you will play 2) which of the two is harder to replace

Sounds like the fiver is a foray into the world of five stringers - it takes a little time to see if it's for you, so if you don't need the money immediately, I would keep it for at least a while. The money is not lost, it has been invested in the bass which you can recoup if needed.

So - my opinion only. Not "fact", just my thoughts:

You got the ADPV bc it was being sold "cheap" (under market), in your mind. Assuming its clean, you might flip it for a small profit.

Alternatively you can try to sell your MIJ - but I think $950 (?) is steep asking price. Selling price might be closer to $700. I sold a non-rare 1992 MIJ Fender P in excellent condition, sunburst, and got $500. Sometimes a rare bass "worth more" takes a LOT longer to find someone who appreciates the rarity with their wallet, to the extent you feel its worth.

Again, that would lean towards selling the ADPV - bc it will sell quicker and for more than I think you'd get for you MIJ.

But... if these were my two only basses and everything else aside, could only keep one, I'd keep the ADPV. I'm not even much of a 5 string guy, but that bass appears much nicer and with a lot more tonal flexibility.

I think you are feeling the same way - bc you bought it to flip but now are feeling to keep it. Just not sure you'll get what you want for the MIJ - and after some time (months?), you may be forced to sell the ADPV.

Fuzzy thinking. You already own the basses. What is the cost of keeping both? It's not like you are paying rent on them or something. I tell you true, it is a rare and wonderful event when totally cool basses appear with your name on them and you manage to own them. Giving such gifts away will only make you sorry later. it's like spitting into the wind. Unloading Meh basses is a whole different question.

If it were me, and I had no forseeable NEED for the five (ie joining a new country band or playing in church (which both, from what I've read on here, do tend to be easier with a five)), I'd definitely keep the Precision.
It's a great looking bass and seems to be the one you're used to..

It's much more versatile, but I've never played a five string and I could get more cash in return for selling this than the MIJ.

TLDR: If you could pick one of these basses as your one and only, which one would you pick?

Keep them both.

You have at least one kid with one on the way. Keeping both basses means you can bequeath them both a bass to have after you're gone.

(Of course, this does mean that if you already have four children, you're waaay behind on your general bass acquisition.:D)
