One with flats and one with rounds ?

Flats to the left of me, rounds to the right, here I am, stuck in the middle with Mesa.

Rounds on most. I do have 2 nearly identical Vintera P's and I swear when the current rounds go dead one of them will get flats. Famous last words... Flats on 2 fretless basses, albeit one is a recent convert, and I'm digging it immensely! I actually now have a 5er with flats, also a revelation, and a perfect fit for one band I play in on occasion. Cheapie Hofner Club has tapewounds, which were on it when I bought it many years ago and still work great. Flats on my 50's Squier CV P-bass and Epiphone Embassy.

Guilty as charged! Flats on my Fender P5, rounds on my Sadowsky M5. And each has a similar cheapo backup for touring.

They serve me in different contexts. In dense bands or upright-ish situations, I reach for the P with flats. Otherwise, I reach for the M5 with rounds.

I occasionally think about installing rounds on one of my P's for variety. But to me; P is about occupying the mids like a soft pillow and flats support that purpose well. If I want to occupy a wider sonic spectrum with rounds, a two-pickup bass supports that purpose better.

Open to suggestions to change my mind though ;)

I have two 5-string (fretted) jazz basses-- the black "rocker" bass wears rounds, and my olympic white one
has LaBella Flats. I play it 95% of the time.
I also have a 4-string black Jazz (fretted) dressed in rounds, and plan to order another 4-string jazz in olympic
white. It'll wear flats. The black ones I seldom play get rounds, and my favourites (olympic white) basses all wear flats.
So I guess I'm guilty of duplication for rounds + flats.

Just for the record: My three fretless J basses wear flats, as does my fretted P-bass.
"Flat is where it's at" .
