Amusingly, the magnets in the large synchrotrons, including Fermilab in the US, are the ultimate power filters because they are superconducting. Huge amounts of energy are stored in the magnetic fields, to the point where it has to be carefully released when they shut the machine down. Fermilab in the US (and I presume the LHC as well) operates as a generator when it is de-energizing its magnets, and returns the energy to the power grid rather than wasting it as heat.
