It's easier to do then it is to explain but here we go.
2 of us on same level of management in engineering. Each of us have 4 people that answer to us, those people are union and we're salary. We each have areas we cover so when a call for our area comes in we call to the union guy assigned on call and then we assist as needed. From initial callout we have 45 mins to return the call and address the problem.
The other manager is a fisherman which is perfect. If we need to cover for each other it works out since his hobby and mine generally take place at opposite times of day. So even if I'm not technically on call during a gig I may be doing double duty the next AM.
Our company gives us great flexibility since it's demanding to ask someone to always be on call. As long as the job gets done they aren't too concerned with how we did it.
I've taken calls or returned calls on break, during load in/out and headed straight to work post gig many times. And I've logged in many times from the family cabin while on vacation.
