Opinion's on a SWR Goliath Sr. 6X10 cab

I have a opportunity to buy a Goliath Sr. cab at a VERY good price. I did a search and most of what I found was very old threads. I have not seen them mentioned very much recently. The spec's on the cab makes it look like it does not go real low compared to a lot of other cabs in its class (55 Hz). I am not sure if that matters so much seeing that I only play 4 strings with standard tuning. I would be using a Peavey VB-2 head with it. I would like a little more punch than I am getting with my 12's. The owner used a SWR 550X head so he could not have over powered it. Has anyone played these cab's and what are your thoughts on them?

i loved mine for three years before it got stolen. very bass heavy, but with good mids. i have a berg nv610 now which suits me better for the fuzzed out old school rock tone i have. i wouldn't balk at a goliath sr. if i had to use one as backline though

I don't doubt that your Genz rig sounds great, but there's no way ANY 210 could meet my volume needs by itself...


Regarding the weight of the Goliath Sr - it's significantly lighter than the Mesa PH 610(or an Ampeg 810) that's my main gigging cab, so I don't look at it as being as difficult to move as you made it out to be... Sure, both those 610s are way more difficult to move than your 210 - but there are many players that need more than a 210 to play in their bands...

Yeah, it gets pretty loud for a 610 - I'd describe it as clear voiced, punchy, with plenty of lows - and plenty bright, too...

If you're looking for a modern rock sound, IMO the Mesa PH 610 or Goliath Sr are two of the best options available in big cabs - old school sound is better served with Berg's NV610 or Ampeg's SVT810e... I've played them all, and that's how I see it...

I've owned two of them. (1st generation, and a newer one with chrome grill) Its loud, and heavy and it looks very serious.

On the other hand, I prefer the more linear response and believe it or not, deeper lows, of my Goliath III 4X10. The Senior doesn't seem to produce the fundemental frequencies of the lowest notes as well, and has a strong low mid hump to my untrained ears. Great in a loud rock setting, but thats not what I play. :)

I don't think you can go wrong though. Its still a very good cab.

Goliath Sr.---Loud, heavy, but nice tone for 4-string, even at low volume.

For 5er, I think the 410 goliath II or III, or even the heavy duty Edens have more B-string booty. Of course, I am more of an Epifani user now, but I did use the SWR pro stuff, and the 6x10 kills for volume. If the price is right, and your vehicle and willingness to schlepp it are up to the job, try it.
