Opinoins on Epiphone Thunderbird?

How is it? The price is really good at $300 dollars. So whoever knows much about it pleas tell me!

Very nice bass for 300$. Some people will complain about the neck dive, but that is only a 5 second fix.

Sound wise, very powerful lows, nice mids, highs can be nice. Not all that muddy unless you solo the neck pup.

Its somewhat heavy, but overall a nice bass! I've had mine for about a year and a half and I'm debating on getting another and modding it.

Go for it! buy one!

I played someones at an open jam once. Neck heavy, and a bit "Rubbery" feeling. I like to play fast, and this wasn't a fast bass. HUGE sound though. I'd give it a SOLID "B" overall...

Well a "B" is better than me in school so in my case thats amazing! (Jk) Hmm I really wish they made them in 5 strings.... Becasue i want a thunderbird really bad. But i need that 5th string for some i the stuff i play.....

Sorry to burst your bubble or maybe create one but they do make 5 string Thunderbirds. Even though I don't like them.

similar, i loved the tone of my epiphone explorer, used with a 4 inch hand made strap and the neck wouldnt dive. The diving neck was its only drawback.

I think (but I'm open to correction) that the 5-string model is a Gibson, and not offered under the Epiphone name. And the Gibson is a neck-through, better woods, better electronics, and $1800.

I personally really like the Epi Thunderbird, 4-string and all. Great sound.

The only current 5-string is one of the Gibson Thunderbird Studio models, which isn't neck-through like the Thunderbird IV is.

Epiphone did used to make a 5-string thunderbird- it was a bit of a monstrosity though... it had the non-reverse body style, but with a P/J pickup configuration,

Personally, I'd go for the Goth series 'Bird for the Mahogany body.

I've tried out the Thunderbird several times. I actually think the neck is quite nice. A bit like a P-bass, but just a tad thinner it feels like. I love the pickup placement, as it gives a great place to anchor my thumb. I've never plugged one in, but one of my friends really wants one to use as a studio bass, as he loves the tone (but he's a guitarist, so his opinion can't be 100% accurate ).

what is a diving neck?

a bass neck that enjoys scuba diving in the bahamas (hey-ooohhh!!)




neck dive: is when the neck of the bass is really heavy so that when you let the bass hang around your neck, the neck of the bass falls to the ground and your bass is pretty much upside down.

The Epi Thunderbird is a pretty solid bass. I had one a couple of years ago. The sound was pretty awesome from what I can remember. The only problem I ever had with it was that I found it to be kinda clunky feeling, but I think most of that was poor setup on my part. It seemed to be a bit on the heavy side as well. The neck dive is easily fixed by moving the strap button. I put mine on one of the screws in the neckplate.

How badly do you need the 5 string? Are you looking to upgrade from your current bass or do you just want a second instrument? Either way, find one at a music store and play with it for a bit, see if you like it.

IMO, the Epibird is completely worth 300$. The tone is great, the looks are killer. The neck dive is REALLY bad though, and it is heavy. I have dealt extensively with one and I like it quite a lot, it sounds awesome when paired with an Ampeg head.
