Orange OB-1K

The marketing points at players who would otherwise be using a clean amp under a dirty as all hell amp. I wonder how many of the detractors have gone on that adventure. It's a great sound.

Orange haven't invented anything like a new wheel but it's a pretty cool plug and play if that's your thing. One cab, no pedals, one mic

If people can't voice what they perceive to be strengths and weaknesses of a soon-to-be-released piece of gear then what is the point of discussing it at all?

We are making guesses about how it might fit our needs or the market based on the information we have. Sometimes that involves comparing it to other existing gear. I was the one that was comparing it to the Ampeg SVT4. I was not doing this to say the Ampeg was better or preferable. I was simply pointing to a well known piece of gear for the comparison of weight.

I most certainly would never say that this amp is definitely going to fail because it might be the most killer amp ever and become a classic, but based on what we know about it I doubt that will happen. It just seems like a rather odd sell. A) Weight, most guys who are going SS these days want a light weight amp. B) Guys who are will sacrifice weight for what they perceive to be better performance would likely just go ahead and get a tube head. C) Price. While the amp certainly sounded cool in the video, if this amp is indeed close to $2000 I just think it hits a weird price point. Again, guys who want tube can buy new for a bit more or buy used for less. If you don't want to deal with tubes you can get a TB1000 (or any number of other heads) with a couple pedals which will allow you to cover this tone as well as many others.

About the only real advantage that I see to this head is it sounded pretty cool in the video and you wouldn't have to deal with replacing and biasing tubes.

I posted on the thread on Orange's forum about this amp when Alex, the USA marketing rep, clarified that the head was actually closer to 25 lbs and the weight that was initially posted was incorrect. Here's what I said:

Hey Alex- thanks for the clarification. I think we're all curious as the reason in the design that makes this amp even weigh 25lbs. Is there an output transformer or an oversized power supply with huge reservoir capacitors or something else that explains the weight? As so much of the bass community is now used to seeing Class D amps associated with lower weight than seen in the OB-1K, advertising to what benefit there is in this added weight would be instructive. Also if that added weight and its hopefully superior design were to serve as a differentiator between the OB-1K and the Terror Bass 1000 aside from the simplified fact that the former is produced in the UK and the latter in China.

IMHO the Aguilar DB750/751 eat the B1500 for breakfast.
That's an opinion formed from owning both at the same time.

Comes down to meeting the individual's needs and the B1500 did not do it for me at all. Glad it works so well for you.

just heard back from L+M in Canada.

$2649.99 in Canada, so likely just under $2500 in the states.

Really disappointing news, it's a huge price for what it is. I wanted one of these based on the youtube demo Ade did but don't think I can justify that steep price tag.
