OrangeTerror 500... Almost it, but not quite, what next?

How far did you turn the master up? Don't be shy about it. Honestly, it goes all the way up just fine.

That said, some technical solutions:
1) Change the input tubes out to something lower gain. Look around, people have had quite a bit of success with tube swaps.

2) Get a louder cab. If you can get the sound you want at lower volumes louder cab will add a lot of volume.

Master was up, never been shy about that.

Although I'm sure I could stick to the orange guns, potentially get a louder cab/swap input and work my way out of the issue, I really just don't have interest in spending that much money on something just to hassle my way out of an issue I see with it. The Orange wasn't it, I'm cool with it, full refund and free shipping back to musician's friend.

Sounds like you may need to give the Genz Benz Streamliner a look/listen. You can get a real clean tube like tone and add as much grit/hair/fur to it by using the gain and volume knobs. You can run it right on the edge and use your attack to get what you want. Great head in my opinion.

As to the GK Streamliner, definitely very intrigued with what I've seen on youtube, great recommendation! Im going to call around and see if there isn't one nearby I can check out first hand. Definitely intrigued though! On that same point, what is your impression of a Streamliner 600 paired with a GK-Neo 112-II 1x12 (for starters). Running at 8 ohms, the watts match up nicely and I love how small that cab is.

First try using a 12AT7 instead of a 12AX7 in the first tube position. Cuts the gain. In fact, I replaced all the 12AX7s with AT7s. It really tamed the beast. (I do the same in my all tube version as well.)

A peavey VB-2 is 899$, the same price as the terror bass. Except the VB-2 iss 225watts of all tube power. (two 12ax7s, 1 12at7, 6 el34s) It gets pretty gritty and also has a separate channel for cleans.

I've never heard a Streamliner personally through one of those cabs but from my experience with GK they have a good bump in the mids which would go really well with the Streamliner. There's another TB'er here that runs a Streamliner through a pair of GK Neo 115's and says they pair up very well. The Streamliner pairs up best with mid voiced cabs as it has such big low end and a slight scoop in the mids. If you get one don't be afraid to swap some tubes or twist the knobs. You will probably end up with some very odd settings to get the tone you're after. Check out the Streamliner tube rolling thread and I believe there's also a Streamliner settings thread. This amp is much more versatile than given credit for.

He doesn't have a problem getting the gritty tone, he wants more clean headroom while being able to dial in grit when needed. From my 20 minutes of playing around on one, I noticed they're sort of a one trick pony. I would personally swap the 12ax7's for a lower gain tube, especially in V1. Should prevent the preamp from distorting so quickly, but will lower max volume

Master volume on high, gain on low is how you get a clean tone with the TB500.
It's known for producing a very gritty tone but it can make a nice clean tone also. If that's not clean enough then you might have to go shopping again.

The Markbass TTE 500 fits the requirement perfectly. Warm and valvey, it's clean unless the input gain is cranked high. The 4 valves give the tone a real classic character.

This. It's like a Terror Bass with leas gain and even more tubey goodness. Clean, bell-like tones that are closer to an all-valve amp than any other hybrid or solid state head. Has all the clean tones of a valve amp as well as the feel. Incredible head. Will overdrive if cranked but you really need to be trying. I use it clean with a Darkglass for my overdrive sounds. Perfect combination.

Just try the GK MB800 or the MB500 Fusion. Both are crazy warm and punchy and the pre grains will give you dirt when you want it and the glass when you want it. And loud? They are loud enough for any and I mean any situation. Don't confuse them with any of their RB series amps, they sound much different.

I hear you, but its not only about volume for me, I play fairly softly pretty frequently. I accompany mostly acoustic instruments. Much more concerned with tone, not 'room shaking'.

Thats why all the low gain/high volume talk wasn't really doing the trick on the Orange. Like I said, I liked it, its obviously a great amp, but its not for me - I know myself well enough to recognize that, and with free return shipping and time to shop around, I'm going to make sure I spend my money on what I want.

Looks like I'll be trying the Streamliner on for size and keep on keepin on if that doesn't work out, from what I've gathered, I'm very optimistic it will.
