Double Bass Orchestral Setup vs Jazz Setup?

I'd like to bump this with a general question, that is not exactly ot, but maybe an extension of the topic.

I am struggling with the sound of a pricey carved Wilfer bass, with Schertler Dyn-B pickup and whatnot. In the context of Jazz combo my second bass, which is an instrument of much lower build and sound quality, sounds and cuts significantly better, even with a cheap Bass Max pickup.

I am not talking about setup or action height - would you think that it is possible that there might be really good high quality instruments that do excellent in orchestra, but would sound too muddy and low in a trio, just by the amount of low end they have?

I used to play a nice 7/8 Lakeburg Baer that was designed to be a cannon with very strong lows. The bass was very resonant acoustically so it was not great with an amp. Usually I can use EQ to tame the feedback between the amp and bass and get a nice tone. This bass always had sort of a boxy sound with the amp that I could not dial out. You could hear the boxy quality acoustically as well, but amplifying the bass seemed to really bring it out since it was associated with the bass's natural resonance.

I used a Realist pickup which emphasizes vibrations from the bass's body. I suspect results would have been better with a pickup that sensed more of the strings and less of the body.
