Hey good peoples of TB Effects Forum:

I would like to update my HPF/LPF TB Wiki with info on the preferred order of signal chain that includes HPF/LPFs. I've read about various configurations, e.g., tuner, HPF/LPF, distortion HPF, spatial effects.

Would you please post your signal chain so I can add some variations to the Wiki?
And, if you've tested some things that didn't work out, it'd be cool to hear about those as well.

Edit: If you don't use a HP/LPF, please post as well as to what your signal chain is and possibly why you don't use or need one.

Thanks,
Stumbo

I use HPF usually with my EUB. My signal chain depends on whether I want to send HPF-affected signal to FOH.

When I do:

Bass - HPF - Preamp - Amp

When I don't:

Bass - Preamp - HPF - Amp

I put my reverb in the preamp's FX loop. I feed FOH from my preamp. I put my tuner to parallel output of my preamp. I don't use any other effects with my EUB.

I generally follow this:

Tuner -> HPF -> Volume -> Modulation -> Delay -> Distortion -> EQ -> LPF
Modulation before distortion, eh? :cautious: I'm gonna have to do some experimenting on my own.

Would that be a specific type of modulation, or any? ...and where would you put a fuzz and a heavy OD in that lineup??

I'd appreciate any info you care to share

HPF on the amp and I don't use an effects loop off. So all pedals on the way to the input.

Tuner -> Compressor -> Clean Boost -> Octaver -> Synth -> OD -> Envelope Filter -> Chorus -> amp

I've played around with the order a bit, but this is what I've come down to. I don't stack a lot. But when I do, it's the compressor and something or the boost and something -- both of which are at the start of the chain. The OD sometimes stacks with the Envelope Filter.

I know that you said you don't stack...so just for you information:

Many people put compressor after env.filter (and synth). The reason is that env. filter is operated by dynamics of your playing...and compressor decreases dynamics.

Many people will also not use boost before env. filter...because it would not trigger the env. filter properly.

Sorry, if you already new all this and my post is redundant. No offense meant. Cheers!

I used an HPF at the very very end of my chain. Its the first thing to hit my amps input. If that's the right way to say that? And then I have some other low pass filtering going on a little early and mid chain.

I like the HPF taking out sub sonics from my whole signal before it hits my amp. Then I use the low passing to adjust for the dirt I use.

No offense taken at all. I've played around with the compressor after the filter, but I don't notice enough of a difference for me to have to have it there, and it's a logistics problem to boot. Sometimes I'll stack the boost on the compressor. But I also like the boost before the OD, and like the OD before the Filter. So I'm kinda stuck with putting those up front.

Thanks!

Semi-hollow body player: HPF is up front before even the tuner. No sense in sending subsonics from the bass' body into any of the pedals. Parametric EQ at the end to boost/taper lows and highs as needed (some day I want to replace it with a HPF/LPF but it's what I have on hand atm).

I move the order of my in-between pedals around too much to list as a chain.

For my Little Big Flavor board
Tuner>HPF>Terraformer>SVT Classic>SV-Pre>SilverDeluxe>LPF/HPF

For my Mini Flavor board
Tuner>Pre of choice>LPF/HPF

My reasoning is, if I'm using a od/distortion, I'd like to tame some of the subtonics prior to a tone stack pedal (useful if using octave or envelope filters). Envelope filters (Baseballs or similar) can be added before the board and spacial effects (reverb, delay) can be added after.

In my current project (semi-acoustic jazz/blues/classic rock trio), I use either a fretless AGB, a fretless Jazz bass or a combo of EUB and fretted Jazz bass (depending on gig). I've chose to minimize my board and put a Tone Stack pedal (SVT Classic Pre) before a LPF/HPF. So far it's working well.

Tuner > *micro-thumpinator* > parametric EQ > compressor > HPF/LPF > SansAmp BDDI

*Placeholder* for the micro-thumpinator. I've ordered it, but haven't yet received it.

I'd prefer to run the HPF/LPF after the BDDI, but I need the XLR out on the BDDI to run into the house (right now I only play at church).

I put my high pass after my overdrive. My reasoning is that the OD may be generating higher order harmonics from the lower frequency signal, so I'll let the full signal hit it, then high pass after the OD has done it's thing. I've never A/B'd what the HPF sounds like before the OD, so my theory is only that - a theory.

There's been some discussion regarding this and it would be good for you to try both before and after od/distortion.
