Compressor- PreAmp AmpHey good peoples of TB Effects Forum:
I would like to update my HPF/LPF TB Wiki with info on the preferred order of signal chain that includes HPF/LPFs. I've read about various configurations, e.g., tuner, HPF/LPF, distortion HPF, spacial effects.
Would you please post your signal chain so I can add some variations to the Wiki?
And, if you've tested some things that didn't work out, it'd be cool to hear about those as well.
Edit: If you don't use a HP/LPF, Please post as well as to how your signal chain is working without them.
Thanks,
Stumbo
Modulation placed before distortion just seems more "natural" to my ears. Any modulation. Same reason I'd find modulation after tube amp grit to be odd. Just personal preference, really. But I also tend to not use much dirt when I have modulation engaged.Modulation before distortion, eh?I'm gonna have to do some experimenting on my own.
Would that be a specific type of modulation, or any? ...and where would you put a fuzz and a heavy OD in that lineup??
I'd appreciate any info you care to share![]()
No offense taken at all. I've played around with the compressor after the filter, but I don't notice enough of a difference for me to have to have it there, and it's a logistics problem to boot. Sometimes I'll stack the boost on the compressor. But I also like the boost before the OD, and like the OD before the Filter. So I'm kinda stuck with putting those up front.
Thanks!

And I typically run fuzz into distortion into OD (heavy into light), all after modulation!![]()
Good on you for including the bass. But now you forgot the cab.Bass (surprising how many leave this out) -> wireless (optional) -> volume pedal -> tuner (usually in a side chain) -> compressor -> modulation effects -> OD/distortion/fuzz -> time-based effects -> pre-amp/EQ -> DI (usually in a side chain) -> HPF -> amp -> audience
This is the chain for my comboGood on you for including the bass. But now you forgot the cab.![]()
.Bass > Tuner > Compressor > Octaver > Overdrive > HPF > Combo > Room
I haven't yet experimented yet with the position of the HPF, I just put it where it protects the amp from any mud from anything in the chain.
I tried my compressor after my Octaver and OD, but I didn't like how it sounded.
Thanks for the suggestion. In this scenario (IMHO), I believe the Compressor and Octaver will benefit with the HPF at the beginning of the chain, after the tuner.
Thanks for the suggestion.
I just realize I need to mention this: to my ears, the octaver makes my 15" speaker sound quite woofy. I hope to diminish this by having the HPF behind the octaver. (Have had the HPF for less than a week, haven't had a chance to try.)
Two HPFs! Wow! I get it, BTW.I haven't used an Octaver but I believe a more 'controlled' signal going in (HPF) may help. Now, how much that affects the signal going to the amp is a good question. I'd think it'd be cleaner and tighter but would have to experiment. On my full board I have an HPF on the front end (under the board) and a LPF/HPF at the end. It didn't start that way (I bought the LPF/HPF first) but after a few 'conversations,' decided to buy and try an 'always on' HPF. It's worked quite well so far, for me.

I'm in the double HPF club. I've got a DSM Noisemaker OmniCabSim Mini with a micro-thumpinator right after it. My signal has still got plenty of heft to it - it's just very well controlled heft! Two HPFs! Wow! I get it, BTW.
I'm not going that route. They are hard to come by here in Europe, none of the (online or physical) stores I know around here stocks any HPFs.
So I had Josh Broughton send one across the pond and it will remain my only one.
I'll experiment if/when I can and post the results here.
