Ordering Lakland USA 44-64

I will go to the shop on Friday to pick out the finish. I'm 20+ min away from Lakland. Could not be any more convinient.
and not to be taken lightly, they are very friendly and helpful to local Lakland owners. You can go in and they'll help you with neck adjustments, and sell you Lakland strings on the spot for a good price. I have 07 5502 fretted and 07 5502 fretless.

For some years, I played various Lakland Skyline basses. About a year ago, I saw a USA 2005 44-60 hanging in my local shop, played it for five minutes, and said "Gimme!" Sold all my other basses to buy it. There may be fancier, cooler looking iterations of the Jazz bass, but I can't believe the build quality can be much better. I did swap out the single-coils for a set of Nordstrand "vintage hum-cancelling" pups. I'm not that much of a traditionalist.:D

My only advice has nothing to do with Laklands, or even basses, but has to do with ordering items that have a long lead time:

Don't think about it. Don't count the days (or weeks or months), don't dream about what you're going to do once that new bass arrives next year, try to forget that you even placed the order. Instead, get on with your life, play the bass you already own. Let the announcement "Hey, your new Lakland is done, send us the balance and come pick it up!" take you by complete surprise. It will make the time between now and NBD so much more enjoyable.

100% yes. Though I failed at this almost every hour of my life from deposit to receipt. Seriously, every night for seven months I drifted off to sleep thinking about it. Then one day it came.

Bob. Do what Bob said.

Beautiful P bass you got there. Congrats. Hope you continue to enjoying it.

I have a 2005 USA Bob Glaub with maple jazz neck and p/j’a in 3 tone with tort pick guard that absolutely love and bought a demo 2019 skyline 44-64 deluxe with rosewood in black with tort pickguard

Love that one as well. I have rounds on the USA and flats on the skyline

I guess I’m sort of partial to the old 3 tone sunburst but they have some great other finishes. Whatever you decide you’re gonna love it!!!

I did pull the pickups and replaced them with Lindy fralins but the stock pickups are great too

Well, I finally decided to put a deposit on a brand new Lakland 44-64 to be built. It would probably be ready around for my 44th birthday, next year.

Always wanted a P bass with a jazz or 1.6 neck with Rosewood Fretboard. Like a Fender P bass, but not really. :D

Have yet to decide on the finish.

Any advice or tips I should know about?

The coolest finish I've seen on a Lakland was like a copper orange on a 44-51 I played at a NAMM show like 8-10 years ago. It looked great, played great and sounded great! I should have bought it on the spot.

I went with a P with a J neck a few years ago... turned out superb.

However...

... if I had to do it all over again, I'd go 1.6" or wider on the nut. I'm a big guy with large mitts and sometimes I wish I had a little more room on the fret hand. I only feel that way about 4-strings -- with 5s, I really like a 1 3/4" nut.

Yeah, while I do enjoy a J neck, I've got other basses which have that covered... so I kinda wish I had done something a little wider with that one.

And if Lakland will do it, I recommend an asymmetric neck (ala Tobias and Modulus) = a little more meat on the E-A side of the neck... a little less on the D-G side... sooooo comfy!

Regarding finishes, Lakland's LPB and CAR pop like no other companies' do. You can't go wrong with either of those.

Before I got my Shell Pink (used from the TB classifieds), I was ready to pre-order one in Coral Pink. That one is my fave, but the Shell was so close (and $1000 less expensive) that I couldn't say no.

Lakland 'fanboy' here.

I've been playing Laklands for over 20 years. I currently own 4- two USAs and two Skylines. I think they're the best. Especially the necks. I previously owned a 4464 with a 1.5" (4460) neck. That bass was incredible. Only reason I sold it was to fund the purchase of my prized 1962 Fender Jazz Bass. And honestly, I feel my US 4460 is a better playing, better sounding bass than my '62! My only advice would be to set aside a lot of time- you're never gonna put that thing down once you pick it up!

I am choosing between LPB (but I think it's a little too light blue for my taste - looking at Google photos) with aged or white pickguard, aged white with black or tort pickguard or 3 tone sunburst with tort.

If you are still considering a blue color, look into their Ice Blue Metallic finish. I have this finish on my Skyline 44-60. Was never much of a blue bass guy. I mean I've had that color in the past but it's not something I typically go for when looking at basses. However, when I saw the Ice Blue Metallic in person I was intrigued. It has the lighter blue for sure but in some settings the silver comes out more, and in some lighting situations, hues of purple pop out. Neat finish. But so much to choose from, I don't envy you........actually yes, I do envy you. Hearing about these custom bass journeys sounds so exciting.

My Glaub came with the Fralins - at one point I somehow got it in my head I wanted something "beefier" and had some overwound SD's put in. The bass never recorded quite right (wasn't bad mind you, but a bit wooly - lacked the "air"). Best move I made was to get another set of the Fralins and drop them back in.

You're going to love it. I've nothing but good things to say about Lakland--great basses, great customer service, and very consistent across the board.

I had a 55-02 Deluxe for many years, and then decided to upgrade (finally!) to a USA 55-94. I had been on the fence about paying the extra money for a USA model, but it is soooo worth it. The weight difference, and my god, the neck is just a dream to play. And, of course, it sounds great. :)

I'm a little partial to Oly white with tort, but also highly recommend all white with a pearloid pickguard and MOP inlays. I'm still deciding if I want to add a pickguard to this beauty I acquired from @nautipaul a couple of months ago:

I had one for a while that I got used 10 or 15 years ago when they were still called the Bob Glaub signature model. It was a fine, fine, superfine instrument to be sure. However, I did NOT like the 1.75" wide at the nut neck at all so I think your choice of ordering it with a 1.5" wide at the nut Jazz neck is a good one.

Bunk, as a Massachusetts guy, what's your local shop that might have a Lakland on the wall? :smug:
