Kinetic Shadow kindly brought it to my attention that there is such a thing as the OBC. It kind of reminds me of that Groucho Marx quotation about not wanting to join any club that would have me as a member, but what the heck...

I'm primarily a guitarist, but I've been doubling on electric bass since HS (many many moons ago). I don't quite have bass playing in my DNA like the great ones, but I usually don't embarrass myself either. I'm just on the road to find out and trying to play some good music in the meantime.

I'm currently playing a MIM J with barts through an early T-Funk and Acme Low B2. Sorry no pics.

Anyway, I posted on another thread about finding a good setup guy to really put a fine point on things. I'd like to get the action a bit lower and nail the intonation. I've taken both things as far as I can and it's just not quite good enough.

Any recommendations? Someone mentioned 5 star guitars in Beaverton. Folks still feeling good about them? Anyone else?

I admit that I haven't worked with many Luthiers, but Five Star does good work.

Hey Mike,

Wow, another Newbergian! Whoda thunk it?

On setups, the 12th fret is always good, though a bit pricey and maybe a longer lead time... There used to be a guy at Tigard Music (Ross?) whom I had heard good things about. Chance at Fearless Guitars in Portland apparently has a touch with basses... My guitar player also has a little side business... I don't know how he is with basses (I do all my own) but his guitars are nice...

Yeah, I noticed that you lived in Newberg.

I'm a CA transplant. My wife and I moved here in Dec '09. I totally dig it here. I'm half Canadian French, so I think my affinity for cooler weather must be in my DNA. We just couldn't be happier. OR is home to us now.

I'll keep your suggestions in mind. I'm probably going to start with 5 star.

I was putting a Gotoh 201 on the instrument last night and I noticed that the nut is actually broken near the G string. Never had that happen. But I need to do something sooner rather than later.

Thanks for the referrals to 5 star. The repairman seems to have a decent amount of experience (checked all the right stuff, made all the right noises, etc.).

I hope it plays well when I get it back.

Cool little store. Owner talked with me a bit. The place was packed by the time I left. Nice to see a little guy doing well.

Is that a drive-in theater? Man, I love going to drive-ins. Takes me back to different times. Need to find some around this area.

Seems like there are several here in Oregon who gave up playing for a long time and just getting back into it recently (although I've only been in the state a little under 2 years and had already done my hiatus/return to playing prior to moving here.)

I'm going to be playing at the Hillsboro Tuesday Market this Tuesday, June 21st... Starts at 5:30 PM downtown at the Sequoia Stage (2nd & Main)... S'posed to be decent weather... This is our 6th year doing this gig, but by far the earliest in the season that we've played!

Thanks for the tip. Newberg seems like a real nice town. Haven't spent much time there but I get a good vibe from it and it has a lot of charm. Will definitely look into the drive-in there. Kind of a family tradition with us.

Speaking of things like drive-in movies that harken back to different times, I took the family to Oaks Park today. Man I love that place. It reminds me of being a kid. It's not so huge that it's hard to get around or that it takes all day to get from one end to the other. Lots of fun for my kids.

Has that beautful, restored 1912 carousel, the old skating rink with wood floors that on certain days features music by an old guy playing pump organ.

I really love this state so much. I've never lived in a place this long and still felt "at home" or wasn't thinking about where to go next and how to move on. And we have barely even scratched the surface of all the places and things there are to see and do here.

I only wish I was a native or at least had spent more years here. But at least I got to see everyplace else so I know I've finally ended up in the best.

Oaks Park is great.

So far I don't really know of any "venues" around here that aren't bars, unfortunately. That may not be a problem for you, but it's a deal breaker for me. :hmm:

But I don't think I'm really good enough for gigs yet anyway (I can thump root notes, but not much more), so I guess it doesn't matter much.

That's all I did when I started out. It fit for the music we played anyway. You don't have be fancy or complicated to have a good time.

Cool, not sure if I can get there that early, but I'll definately stop by. Hopefully you'll still be on stage when I get there.
