Origin Effects BassRig Ampeg B15 Fliptop recreation

It is ofcourse very different from a Noble. This emulates a full amp and a cab, the Noble is ‘only’ a pre amp. I own a Noble but I tour with a Bassrig SV. I need that drive. Ordered the BR15 immediately, since I love the Bassrig SV so much.
In theory the Fifteen when set clean can probably compete with the Noble but with more versatility and somewhat different overall voicing (of course no actual tube "mojo" though ;) ). The two use different classic passive tone stacks, but if you boost only with the Fifteen then the responses shouldn't be totally off from each-other just with somewhat less of an interactive nature between EQ bands from the Fifteen. Of course the Fifteen also allows cutting, which the Noble tonestack doesn't. As far as non-linear harmonic comparisons, hard to say- I will be curious to hear a comparison for sure!

Finished my first test run with the Fifteen. Most interesting observation is with cab sim off and gain set clean, the Fifteen sounds remarkably similar to the DCX bass (which I had in the signal path so I could A/B). In overall tone and EQ tuning. Of course the Fifteen offers lots more options. More testing tomorrow. Someone should peer check me on this.

Will do when it arrives tomorrow!

That's actually a good thing for me, as I could see this replacing the DCX in some signal chains (when I'm not looking for its particular distortion character).

The DCX is interesting in the way that the EQ interacts with the clipping as well- someone from Origin explained that to a degree you can cut Bass before the clipping but boost it after the clipping and the reverse with the Treble (most of the cut comes after the clipping circuit and most of the boost before). Pretty unique implementation!

Yep - The Noble is like a Flinstone Vitamin for your bass. Fattening and rounding the tone without changing your Bass’s identity. You can’t drive it like a preamp. It wasn’t designed to distort.

I would love to hear some thoughts on anyone who can run the Super Vintage through the B15 cab sim. Same goes for the Bassrig 64 Black Panel. I love 15s personally. It's just the default sound in my brain for most things - I bet I would prefer the B15 sim comparped to the Bassrig 64 2x15. That was the weak link of that pedal for me. Just didn't love the cab sim. And I like cab sims.
I just ran the SV into the 15 cabsim only and it does Sound pretty good. Though the SV cabsim is pretty good.

I just couldn’t get along with the origin black panel either the amp or amp plus 215 sim. Just not my thing, but the origin fifteen is very nice.

Of course if you want the SV into a 15 cab only get the origin 15 if you need the amp part too, otherwise there’s plenty of other options.

Since you're in the mood of taking requests, how much of a pain would it be to add a headphone out that uses the DI output?

With the cab defeat, it requires redesigned the backend of the pedal which is obviously work and design time, but component wise, it's reasonably neutral. You'll increase the component count in doing so, but not by much.

Adding a headphone out wouldn't be neutral. You'd need a new connector and potentially controls (new metalwork), something to bring that mic-level signal up and headphone amp circuitry to actually drive some cans. So you'll be adding quite a lot of additional complexity to the BOM in doing so, and I don't think people are too keen on these getting even more expensive to manufacture then they already are.

Your best bet would be a really simple personal monitoring headphone amp, some effective options can be found at slightly mind-bogglingly low prices. They'll have a Mic input and dedicated gain circuitry for that, they'll also have a button to spread that mono input across both L and R sides. Some even have stereo line inputs so you could run backing tracks for practice if you wished. I can find some, delivered to my door, that are cheaper than the cost of adding the same functionality to our BOM.

My BR15 arrived yesterday (0055) and I only had a short amount of time to try it out last night. However, I noticed some similarities with the DCX Bass as well, although I did not compare the two directly. In the past I have owned both the Black Panel & Super Vintage, but I feel like the new Fifteen is definitely my favorite of the bunch and will be a keeper.
I have not tried the cab sim yet, but I did run it through the effects return on my Quilter Bass Block v3 (set to modern) and into a Bergantino CN112 and was really happy with this simple combination.

After more testing (passive P bass, Rolls headphone amp)..... setting the Fifteen (no cab) and DCX (eq mode) flat with no OD, the core tone of the Fifteen is quite similar to the DCX but definitely a tad more ampy with a little mid focus. But as I dial in generous EQ they start sounding more similar and can be made to sound identical at setting I normally use. With mild drive settings, again very similar. The 15 starts to pull away at higher drive settings. With my P bass and the 15s drive set in the 1 o'clock region, the amp sim becomes really touch sensitive and pretty darn lovely.

I am a DCX/P-Bass devotee thus my testing to see of the 15 gets me enough value-add to displace the DCX.

Now I have to sort out the 15's 1x15 cab. I think I like the SV 8x10 cab sim better and the '64 cab sim the least. But in general, I have not been using the cab sims much, preferring the 1/4" out amp sim.

Thanks for the detailed reply.

I often see people wonder why various bigger multifunction pedals like this don't have a headphone out, and I sometimes wonder the same thing. But I also had no idea what would be needed to add it. It looks so simple because it's just a small jack.

Interesting, the similarities between the DCX and the Fifteen. I’ve received the Fifteen today, and I’m going to our rehearsal room on my own tomorrow (band on a break until January) to test drive it. I will bring my trusty Pbass, and my DCX to compare both pedals.

Thing is, if they happen to be that similar, I might not need the Fifteen…. I already have a SansAmp ParaDriver V2 that takes me to SVT territory (give or take). And the DCX could be used as a main preamp if needed, plugged into the SansAmp and use the latter’s DI (or even with low Blend to use the EQ as well).

Looking forward to trying them out, room’s amp is an Ampeg SVT 450 and a 4x10 Ampeg cab. Not the best head so I’ll bypass the preamp and go straight into power amp.
